Import Tax
Hi, i am planning on emigrating to NZ in the next 2 years, so i have been trying to research what i can ship over with me, meaning i am considering buying a prefabricated house and machinery FROM CHINA and having it shipped over to NZ, does any one know if this will be taxed and how much, i have looked on the NZ taxing sites and i think there is 15% gst, but considering that i will be emigrating to NZ i was wondering if there might be any allowances(not from UK but China).
I wont go on any more i am confusing myself.
Thanks.

I can't see that either of your posts have been "managed" so guessing it is most likely that you posted in the main forum, which is fine.
as for your question, it's hard enough getting cars and motor homes in when you are emigrating so a whole house
lots of lift and shift properties here so you may want to have a look at what is on offer here, trademe would be a good place to start. I went to a lovely looking house at the weekend which was half built there and half added on by a lift and shift and reroofed together and I see another one having been moved and now being settled into its new grounds on my journey into work. have seen at least houses on the move since I've been here so it is fairly common.

Re: Import Tax
Thanks for that Mrs, yes i know what you are saying, but lift and shift is not a problem for me, it will arrive in a container and the Specifications are to NZ standards and much higher and a bargain at the price, i have also been travelling to nz for the past 30 years so i know what is there.
I went into sheep dip to post my first posting dont know what i have managed to do.
Thanks again.

Re: Import Tax
That's an interesting question and I don't know the answer other than looking at the IRD site, which you have done.
I wonder whether you need to pay tax if you are resident in the UK for tax purposes when you do it? Might be worth a call to the IRD and asking them.

Re: Import Tax
My idea was order it as soon as i get to nz, the the IRD site does give you the basic numbers for tax but being as i am moving over to nz i though i might be in with a chance of paying no tax as an allowance of the move or a lower tax, i just thought i would ask on here just in case some one else has already gone through tis type of thing, otherwise i will have to do some running around when i come over again in the next few months.

Re: Import Tax
My first thought is that you will need to pay the 15% as you are bringing in something new.
There is an allowance for new migrants and their worldly goods but even with that one has to be a little careful about having new goods in one's container.
Perhaps tap Customs on the shoulder to ask them direct and let us know the outcome please.
Welcome to BE by the way.

Re: Import Tax
I would think you would have to pay the gst but give customs a ring. Could you maybe set yourself up as an importer of goods and get round the tax that way. No idea what I'm talking about really lol but there must be ways and means around stuff like this as plenty of stuff get imported to NZ by folk. If it goes well and you find the process easy you could maybe have yourself a nice little business there selling kit homes to us here.
