Immigration 'reset'
I guess the writing was on the wall and no surprises here but Government announces 'once in a generation' immigration reset in the post COVID world.

Re: Immigration 'reset'
There's talk about partners of NZ citizens not being able to work, think that's very short sighted but guess they may o allow partners to apply to work under some other form of criteria, I mean you wouldn't want to stop a partner who is say a nurse or teacher not being able to work. Also where would that leave any children of the couple, would they then be allowed to work when they leave college, can't see them stopping kids being allowed to be educated so they must allow them to gain employment.?

There was also a segment on Seven Sharp, apparently yesterday, saying that the population growth has slowed with 2020 seeing the slowest birth rate ever, so to say the migration rate is causing population growth to be exceeding countries capacity is also short sighted, get the infrastructure sorted now rather than 15 years or so when a new generation would be looking for accommodation and work.

Seems to me that quite a number of things are stacking up towards another massive outflow of migrants. It's a grim financial proposition already for most heath care professionals and teachers trying to make ends meet, so it surely won't be viable for anyone thinking of coming here now, not with house prices the way they are, a three year pay freeze and now doubling down and making it extra hard for folks to get visas.

I consider that immigration should improve quality of life measures across society or it will foster resentment among those displaced within society. New Zealand's population has grown at a much higher rate over the past decade than it had done historically so this could be seen as just a regression to trend: https://www.stats.govt.nz/topics/population
New Zealand's population age demographics are actually better than many other countries and our pension system is fully funded, unlike many other countries. Immigration is important to New Zealand and we need to get it right, not just on skills but making sure we have sufficient housing and infrastructure to make sure all those living here can enjoy an ever higher quality of life.

“There are no plans, at this stage, to change specific purpose, short-term business or visitor visas, the Working Holiday Schemes, nor non-partnership family and humanitarian categories,” he said.
