Australian immigration should have a one-off amnesty whereby NZ cleanses itself of all the wannabe Ozzies at one go. Seems a shame (in every way) they are stuck here for five years.

It must however be amusing for native aussies who must p**s themselves laughing with all these poor poms doing their time in NZ before they are allowed in. With their history its kind of ironic really.

True story

A friend of Mrs Nice Guy is a pom and already has Kiwi citizenship.

Her husband got his Kiwi passport and a job opportunity in Oz, so off he went leaving wife to tidy up the affairs and sell the two houses they had.

Wife was in the process of getting the Kiwi passport with the intention of joining husband legally in Oz, at border control it's called a SVC, Special Visa Category.

I'm not too sure why but she had to contact the NZ passport office for some reason, it could be to ask about the relationship with her husband, but in the casual conversation that ensued she let drop that she would be moving to Oz.

Conversation tone changed and passport application instantly refused, possibly for a very long time (this is over 1 year ago now).

Sadly since then they have both gone their separate ways.



So yep, they can do something.......and they do!!

Just aside as well, the person in question has not claimed he/she will necessarily be staying to get NZ citizenship/passport.

So far it is only speculation fro this thread..............as far as I am aware!

Sounds like an urban myth

If she was a citizen she cannot be refused a New Zealand passport, it is one of the privilages of citizenship. If on the otherhand she informed the citizenship office that she was selling up and moving to Australian then she can be refused citizenship.

SCV's are not refused at border control because you intent to move to Australia, you would already be in Australia by that time anyway as SCV's (subclass 444) are issued at the far end they would have had to deport her if it was refused.

Its not that smelly at all - lots of people change their perceptions of NZ and Oz when they have been here a while and some of them decide to grit their teeth, bear it and take the passport at the end.
You'd be suprised how many people have done this or are in the process - just listen to a few ex-Pats around the workplace, I met three who did just that or were at the end of the process and couldn't wait to get away once it had come through.
Plus I know several other people socially who are in the same quandry....
Anyhow, how is it that much worse than coming over on a VV with every intention of working here and then applying for PR with NZ experience?
At least it is technically more "legal".....
