Hello All,

I'm a 28 year old Q.S, married with no kids. Having spoken to various agencies and attended expos here in the UK apparently i'll have ''no problem whatsoever'' finding a job in NZ! I'm wanting to fly out end of sept as my house is rented from then. I would like to live in Christchurch, but anywhere in the S.I really. Can anyone help? I've got my visa and everything police checks etc, does anyone know what i'm doing wrong???? :confused:

I am a bit confused as what you are asking ;) Have you looked at jobs on the internet and what trade are you a QS in?

Have you looked on www.seek.co.nz ? there was a few construction QS jobs on there. One problem is that NZ employers need to see your commitment to moving over here - like attending for interviews in person! However, some are willing to do telephone interviews. I know of two really good recruitment agents who may or may not be able to help. I can PM you their details if you like - no promises, but might be worth trying.
When we looked at coming no-one took OH seriously in his job applications so we had to fly over just for 6 days (all we could afford and manage timewise) so that he could attend interviews and get a job offer.

Nearly every immigrant arrives in NZ without a job, don't worry, we have all been there ! Unemployment here is very low, you WILL find work !
As previous posters have said, only rarely will jobs be offered before setting foot in the country, mainly medical posts.
It is all a big gamble, i know, but one with a calculated risk ! There are lots of jobs here, you'll be right !

Hi Buz10, I too am a QS, and did live in NZ till 2001, although I did go for a 'trip' back in late 2006. Best bet is to contact BBT in Auckland, and they will sort you out for interviews etc, even in the SI. From my experience, you will not be short of offers, even if the building industry is on a downturn (like the UK). The major hurdle you will face is wages, in Auckland an Intermediate QS will be about $75 - $85k, and considerably less in all other parts of NZ, with no health, pension or (usually) a car. Buz, am currently working for Fletchers who are the biggest construction company in these lands, drop me a line with some more details of what you are looking for and I can maybe help out a bit, or at least point you in some useful directions....

FWIW I had the job in the bag before leaving the UK, so had my visa and flights over paid for by the company

Thank you very much. I had a face to face interview in London 2 weeks ago with Les Haywood. It went well and I hope to hear from him 2nd week in July so fingers crossed I might see you soon!

My husband is a QS and works for Fletchers in Hamilton. We got the job in the UK as they came over to do interviews in London - Les Heywood. So good luck. They helped with all our re-location and medical costs, so if you can get a job that way, it all helps. We did try with BBT in Auckland, but didn't find them very helpful - well our contact wasn't anyway.
