I read on internet last week after googling Ikea in Auckland that the local council will not give the go ahead for an Ikea store in Auckland because of reports around the world that they tend to to create major traffic problems around their stores area and it will also have an impact on local furniture traders selling very expensive furniture because of the lack of competition.

I agree about IKEA- ppl often seem to be sniffy about the quality of their stuff and yet all the bits I've bought from there have really stood the test of time. I like their stuff, can't wait for them to get here.

Dont know why people knock Ikea stuff. We had all our furnitue in the UK from IKEA and for the 5 years we had it before leaving, everything was fine, never broke and was well worth it.
Since being in NZ, we've had to pay 2-3x the price for cheap furniture which frankly is crap! In 5 years owning a home in the UK, never had anything break, but in 6 months here I've had a table and chair set break, washing machine, waste disposal, oven heating element, light switch, and 6 bulbs all break. Grrrrrr....

The other reason is the sheer disruption the traffic would cause, people would start queuing for a week before the store opened, the country would grind to a halt within days And can you imagine the riots that will start when it runs out of stock on day one?
The Sylvia Park opening was enough for one country's lifetime, NZ isn't ready for Ikea yet.

I agree with the above. The prices IKEA sells at are are way below what is asked here. If IKEA came they would take all the trade away from the fifties-type shops around and also put a damper on the extortionate prices asked for furniture and kitchenware items here. The whole infrastructure here cannot take a modern company such as IKEA.

Since we got here tried to buy NZ made items, but of these in 6 months we had the sofa, dining table, washer, dryer, waste disposal, oven heating element, vacuum cleaner, 2 pairs of shoes, 1 pair of jeans, 1 jacket, 4 pairs of socks all break or fall to peices. All brought since we arrived in NZ and its pee'd us of a little bit thats all.
In 5 years of owing our house in the UK, none of our household goods were this poorly made and cost much less.
Oh well, such is life. We've re bought, but when we saw the Kiwi Made remark, we steered clear and haven't had any problems since. I will say though that Kiwi customer service is exceptional, so even though we've had a lot of stuff break, its not been hard to get things resolved as customer service is great.

So which high quality 'NZ made' brands in particular are we talking about? Other than Fisher and Paykel appliances and Kumfs shoes.
