Re: IKEA (almost) Stonefields, Auckland
I heard IKEA is penning its first NZ store at the new development out West Auckland - the stuff that is going on across the road from the old Westgate.

There seems to be flurry of Ikea type places opening up. One just started in Newmarket- next to Freedom Furniture/Opposite Noel Lemmings.
Prices are "interesting"!!

Am I the only one that doesn't like Ikea?
Ok some of the furniture is good, dresser drawers can be nice and deep unlike a lot of other providers but really the physical shopping experience is awful. I know they now provide some additional exit points around the store, but no where enough for my liking. My first experience there was one way in and one way out, that being having to walk through the whole entire store and pass the tills? not good if you are claustrophobic, having a child that just doesn't want to be there (not mine, other peoples) and any other reason that requires a quick exit.

I look forward to any increased competition, some of the furniture shops on Moorhouse ave in Christchurch are crazily overpriced.

I find it refreshing that there isn't an IKEA store in NZ. Any aussie magazine or TV show on interior design will reveal how insidious it is. And when we lived in Bristol it was worse - the majority of houses were decked out in cheap pale wood.
I much prefer the eclectic NZ style - almost a junk shop meets craftshow look.

I love ikea. The one at Newcastle now has lots of short cuts which are sign posted really well. I can now go in and go straight to the cafe without looking at furniture first. I can get my caffeine fix whilst getting excited about shopping. ( sad I know!).

I miss Ikea for all the market place bargains, the cheap pictures and frames, the candles, the bedding section and the bargain bit at the end. Yep any competition is good as far as I'm concerned here in NZ. The formula here to work out profits for any business seem way too greedy to me.

New Zealand will never have an IKEA here
All those furniture shops currently set up here would complain about the competition. All our customers are going there... hmmm wonder why - have you looked at your prices recently? Then the old we only have a population of 4 million excuse comes out.
Having said that, the single bed with mattress, pillow, sheets and duvet purchased for $399 we thought was an absolute bargain.

Will they. Won't they. Will they. Won't they.
It's something that has been rumoured on and off ever since I arrived here.
I'd like it to happen simply for some decent competition for a change, even though I have never, ever been inside one of their stores.
I'd certainly buy their stuff if the price was right. Would make a change from the same old stuffy ...stuff.
edit....

I wish a Clas Ohlson would open up here as well, that and a few Nettos, Lidls etc would transform NZ.
