If we arrive in December......
....Say around mid December, would it be a nightmare trying to find accommodation for around 3 months. Will all the rentals/Holiday homes be all pre-booked for the holiday season??
Is it better waiting until January?
Any advice is good
Cheers Jads

Hmm... I'd say yes! Why don't you have a look now and pre-book one for your own peace of mind. There's nothing worse than running out of time to find somewhere for your family to live... couldn't imagine having to do it at Christmas time!

On balance it would be better to arrive mid December than mid January. Depends where you are going as to how available short term lets will be - for example some uni towns will have lots of vacancies, as will the larger cities, while the tourist spots like Nelson and Tauranga will be filling up (with tourists and seasonal workers).

only speaking for our holiday let and where we are, but I have been booked up for December and some of January for quite a while now. I am in quite a holiday area though - everything up here gets busy then - so perhaps where you want to be won't be a so much of a problem. I tihnk the advice of booking something in advance is good - even if it's just for a week to get to know your surroundings.
I think pretty much all holiday rentals are furnished and would tend to be shorter term rents - I do 3-4 weeks tops. Non holiday rentals are not all furnished, but tend to be cheaper and will do much longer lets. Also if you're anything like we were you will have people lending you things for the time till your container or whatever arrives.
Good luck with everything.

If you are heading for one of the major cities, have no fear the place will be empty over the Christmas period. Auckland is as dead as the proverbial dodo, hardly any shops open or restaurants and probably not a good time for trying to organise anything or get things done. It's like August in Paris! The majority of small businesses, shops and cafe owners shut up shop and head for their holidays, generally those in the workplace going overseas tend to start disappearing from mid December and not returning until the middle of January. A large percentage of the rest will be going 'home' to family somewhere else in NZ, camping or to ther baches. So it is very, very quiet, indeed. Needless to say everywhere out of town will have been booked out for months.
If you are looking for a job mid January will be the best option as it takes a good while for people to get back to their full volition and nobody will be doing much in the way of hiring or firing over that period from mid December onwards.

There are 3 motels in Rangiora Jads. You could try booking short-term into one of those and just go down the townstreet to the local realators when you get here, they have quite a few rentals and some advertised in the local paper. http://www.rangioralodgemotel.co.nz/default.asp

Tell the motel you are emigrating and try and negotiate a cheaper rate. At least that way you'll have something booked to come to and will have a pleasant base to start your search for a rental. The motels are lovely here, all fully equipped and clean and all the owners will have heaps of local knowledge to pass on.

Most (non holiday) house rentals are UNFURNISHED ! But you will be OK if you arrive early December, but don't worry ! You will ALWAYS be able to find something. It would be like arriving in England in early July, life doesn't stop , does it ?
Kiwi Motels are very well equipped, like a "home from home", yes, but, hmm a "Kiwi" home. I would hardly say they were of Travelodge standard, most are old and a bit scruffy

jads -
Are you coming to the Chch area (Rangiora was mentioned)? If so, it should be no problem finding a furnished rental (house) for either from December or from January, in fact it will probably be easier this year than ever before as many houses that haven't sold are being put out for rent, often furnished, for short term.
All of the letting agencies here have furnished rentals on their books so they would be a good place to start your search. The newspaper lists furnished rentals. And there are websites (can't remember the name of one of the best ones, but it's something like 'holiday homes' or such - not just holiday homes though, includes furnished properties available year round for shorter and longer terms, with rent rates cheaper for longer term).
Note that many furnished rentals are not advertised until closer to their availability date because it's so expensive to advertise in the papers and on TradeMe, plus on TradeMe if an ad is put on too early it can drift to the bottom of the list. Basically at this point you should definitely be checking with the agencies (who will have a good idea about what will be coming available at the time you need a place), on 'holiday home' or 'furnished rental' websites (do a google search), and on TradeMe.
It's probably best not leave the search until you arrive. However, you'll almost assuredly be able to find a motel somewhere if you do leave it too late, even if just out of town. You know, it might be fun to rent a real 'holiday let', for instance in one of the nice outerlying areas of Chch (Governor's Bay, Lyttelton, Diamond Harbour for example) where you'd get sea views for instance, or be right on the beach, or the like. Sumner village (or even Southshore if you could get a place with views or right on the beach or water) would be a fun introduction to Chch too before you have to start 'real life'. Inner city rentals I would avoid unless you're very 'streetwise' - these tend to be more expensive anyway and smaller, often apartments.
Bo-jangle's post re month of December is spot on. Terrible time to be looking for a job or for getting any business whatsoever done, and goes on like that until well into January. But still a nice enough time to be here familiarizing yourself with the place...

The best source of house rentals is local free newspapers, you get these in many shops, or there is always a copy in the local library. I wouldn't bother with agencies. We arrived in January , the middle of the summer holidays, and had no problems renting a house. Also that is the time for the annual sales and you get some good bargains for furniture , white goods. Don't worry , just do it !
Also city motels/hotels have plenty of room in summer
