A little fun post
New Zealand in the Northern Hemisphere
New Zealand Moved to the Northern Hemisphere
If New Zealand could be taken on an imaginary journey to the opposite side of the globe, so that it lay in the Northern Hemisphere in the same latitudes as it currently does in the Southern Hemisphere, this is approximately where it would appear on a map.
The map is arranged so that cities that were on the east coast remain on the east coast, while cities that were in the north are now in the south.

New Zealand moved to the Northern Hemisphere
It’s clear that New Zealand stretches rather a long way from north to south, beginning on the same latitude as mid-France and ending in North Africa.
If we look at where New Zealand’s cities would be located, it turns out something like this:
• Dunedin would be in the Bay of Biscay, on a similar latitude to La Rochelle and Lyon.
• Christchurch would be on Spain’s north coast, on a similar latitude to Bilbao, Toulouse and Florence.
• Wellington would be close to the border between Northern Portugal and Spain, on a similar latitude to Barcelona and Naples.
• Auckland would be in southern Spain, on a similar latitude to Malaga and Tunis.

Wellington sounds idyllic, doesn't it? Just like the shores of the Mediterranean.
Except when you realise it's surrounded by the chilly Tasman Sea and the perilous waters of the Cook Strait, exposed to filthy howling southerlies that blast straight up from Antarctica, hemmed in by huge hilly ranges and sitting on top of an earthquake fault.

Looking at that , we should have moved to Portugal

Except I think being surrounded by oceans, NZ doesnt get the extremes of temperature of their corresponding European position. Neither as cold in winter or as hot in summer.

Although I looked Malaga up, having never been there, and it is 3 to 4 degrees warmer than Auckland all year round.

Hate Paella, have too many left feet for flamenco and have no interesting in watching someone taunt a bull. Worst of all New Zealand would be much too close to Britain for comfort.

Pish. The lowest sea temperatures in winter in Naples are around 14C. Palm trees and olives grow there. It's not called the Neopolitan Riviera for nothing. None of this can be said about Wellington, a city I lived in for 25 years, which sits slap-bang in the Roaring Forties.
For anyone looking for more accurate climate comparisons, use this map. For Wellington, add the wind scales of somewhere like the Orkneys or Patagonia.
