Default Humidifiers

It seems that I need one but does anyone have any recommendations. It would be nice to have one that would cover a large area, but I'm also thinking it might be nice to have one that puts out a warm mist. With that in mind the Air-O-Swiss models seem good, but flippin' expensive.

Any suggestions?

We have a Venta Sonic that we bought a few years ago. I should say, I bought it. We had an old Panasonic that I hated because it was noisy. Mrs Bill can tolerate all manner of commotion and still fall asleep, but I need QUIET. This appears to be the latest model. It works well.

They are indeed top-rated.

Pick out one with a buy-it-now and you can get a rebate for 25% (no I am not selling them, it's a promotion that eBay & PayPal & Microsoft have going).

Humidifiers are great in the winter with dry forced air heating, for skin as well as the lungs (asthma).

We have one attached to our furnace. Not sure how it works, since it was there when we bought it. It's been quite a good help with my allergies though! It's an Aprilaire model, if that helps any. If you're buying one due to allergies, a good website for allergy products is www.allergybuyersclub.com. though you can expect to pay a pretty penny on that site, they give you ratings a good description of what each one does.

Aprilaire is a highly respected brand for the furnace I think. I've always had one on my furnaces - I prefer that to a freestanding one.

On our pediatricians recommendation we bought one a few years back when one of the kids was having a few problems. We got a Honeywell Whisperquiet or something like that. Total pile of cr@p. Sounded like a 747 running an engine test. I freecycled it cos I was too embarrassed to put it in the garage sale.

We have one attached to our furnace as well. Have no idea what the brand name is - it was the thing to have when we had our house built. I personally think it doesn't do squat.....but I can say that for the heating as well. We live in a two story fairly biggish house and our upstairs master bathroom always feels like you're going to get frostbitten in the winter.

Thanks for all the suggestions - the furnace one isn't an option for us as we have steam heat, so I'll look at the others.

Ray, you couldn't pay me to live in Florida.

Cold air humidifiers are more efficient than warm so depending on how many you have and how long you run them a cold one could save you a bunch of money over time.

I was thinking that warm might mean we could turn down the thermostat by a degree (maybe). We'll see. I'm still torn because I can't find any with consistently good reviews.
