A lot of ovens have a narrow grill protection flap at the top that has to be open to let the oven switch on. It is to stop heat reaching the knobs. Worth a try

You might have already figured this out, and I apologise if I'm stating the obvious, but the knob with 1-3 on each side has to be selected for either grill or bake/roast. If you don't turn it one way or the other I don't think it will work.

And if it has any kind of timer, make sure its turned to manual (often a little 'hand' sign)

Sorry, but as my wife would testify, I have no idea how to use an oven

Well it's beaten me. Called agent. She is so dozy I think this will take a while to sort. However had a brain wave. I forgot we have a second kitchen downstairs

My suggestion would be turn the small left hand dial to manual. The right hand one to + (which I think means 'on' although if it's a gas oven it could be the ingition switch). Turn the middle dial to the red zone and the bottom to the desired temp.

The middle dial relates to whether or not the vent is open I think. One side may be better for grilling, the other for baking.

Thanks everyone. Got it going at last. Above the main oven is a small flap. If you lift this it starts!!
