How much to set up a house in NZ?

Hi we are considering selling/ leaving most of our furniture back in the UK. We would just bring across essentials and things that we really wanted.
I was wondering if $20,000 wold be enough money to set up a house for 2 adult and 2 kids.
Thanks

As far a I understand it is usually cheaper to ship furniture as replacing in NZ can be more expensive.

It's costing us about £3500 to ship all our stuff.

The reason we are gonna leave most stuff is because my hubbies parents own the house (part of farm). They are then gonna rent out the house as a holiday let so it needs o be furnished. They will give us money to buy what need over there. That way if after 2 years we decided its not for us, our house is still here with its stuff. But trying to work out howmuch we will need to buy new x

Depends, of course, on what sort of quality you want. "Cheap as chips" or "McMansion".

Also depends on whether you're renting or buying. Some places rent furnished or semi-furnished, others are bare walls and floors.

For a 'reasonable' level of quality, excluding a fully fitted kitchen, $20K should be plenty. There are several 'furniture warehouse' type places, and if you can wait for a Sale for some of the stuff you can save a lot of money.

These guys: http://www.bigsave.co.nz/ have always given us a good deal, and we've bought plenty from them. It will give you an indication of furniture prices. For things like cutlery, then Briscoes http://www.briscoes.co.nz/ usually have a sale on. We've bought loads from them, too. Towels, pots & pans, glasses & cups, dinnerware, and so on.

Oh, yeah, and when you first get here you'll have nothing, so your first trip to Briscoes I suggest getting TWO trollies! They sell just about everything you need for setting up a household, excluding furniture.

WRT mattresses, I also suggest getting mattress protectors. It can get hot in summer, depending on where you are located, and you don't want to be sweating through a brand new mattress! :o

And another thing - don't be shy about asking for a bargain. If you're buying a houseful of furniture then you want a 'deal'!! Or you'll go next door, and get one there!

At the cheaper end of the scale is The Warehouse (where Kiwi's get a bargain). We picked up a decent 150L chest freezer for $299 last weekend and my $400 heat pump/air con is still purring away.

It was a Warehouse special back on 06.01.13, The red alert deal of the day. Only a cheap and cheerful 3.5kw Akai. We've already got a log burner but wanted something to cool. Us Northerners aren't used to the NZ summers!

I came over in 2010. Other than white wear (which came with my rental) I set up a full 2 bedroom house with $5000. Lot so stuff (pots, crockery etc) was cheap Warehouse 'make do's' while I waited for my boxes to arrive but almost all of it is still going strong.
Sofas from Big Save, beds from a local bed warehouse/factory (my real estate agents husband was the foreman so got a good deal) dining table and bedroom furniture were 'off the floor' sale models from Harvey Norman, pretty much everything else from Briscoes or Warehouse.

If you're looking for something more permanent and up to date then take a look at http://www.freedomfurniture.co.nz/

Farmers have a permanent sale on too, we bought sofas from there: http://catalogues.farmers.co.nz/ the good thing about Farmers is they barely ever change their range, so if you break a plate you can still get the same ones; two for the price of one, seven years later.

If it's Auckland you're coming to, we find the prices of electricals and appliances are consistently cheaper than elsewhere at: http://www.magnessbenrow.co.nz/
