Default How job agencies work

Hi,

I just landed and found my place to stay a week ago. In UK, we can just pop in the recruitment agencies and register. I have been told by NZ recruitment agencies to write a covering letter and send my CV to the consultant first before an interview with the consultant can be arranged. Does this procedure apply to all agencies?

I managed to see a consultant in the first week but the interview was arranged by the UK consultant before I came over.

I have already sent a few e-mails, received just a call and said "I cannot help you".

Can someone share their own experience on job hunting with me ?

It seems the road is getting longer.

Regards
Alex

'Allo and welcome to our NZ forum. You'll see I've moved your topic/thread into the main NZ forum. It was fine in Intros but more people will see it here.

I'll be no use at all with how job agencies work but perhaps this post on N ZCVs might help in some way. Click HERE

Hi Alex

When I replied to a job ad, it was usually placed by an agency and therefore I was interviewed by the recruitment consultant, prior to being invited to a interview with the recruiters client. Slightly long winded, often had to go to 4/5 interviews as the list got cut down.

If I were you, I would be proactive. Call any agencies you think might be interested in you. Speak to a consultant, send your CV with a covering email and most importantly.......ring them back! Don't sit around waiting for the phone to ring.

Also your CV probably needs to "Kiwified" to get a better response!

Is a great thread on how to do this.

Hi Catchafire,

Many thanks for your reply and valuable advice!
Being proactive and building up a network of friends will certainly make a difference.

Also thank Bev for moving my question to the right thread.

Cheers
Alex

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your job search!

We've been here for about 3 months now (?) and OH has had no luck with the recruitment agencies. He's in telecom and IT and we're in Wellington. Apparently all the jobs are in Auckland and apparently it seems to be who you know not what you know.

Hi Ellenarosemary,

I am also in telecom and IT. I have completed some projects for the Accounts department, therefore, I can apply for Accounts jobs too.

Hi Kija.

Thanks for your reply! Jobs are there in Auckland but I need to get some Kiwi experience.

Alex
