House sitting in NZ - an alternative to a rental/motel
I had a moment yesterday .
There have been a few threads recently about where to stay when one first arrives. A holiday let. A rental . A motel.
What about house sitting? You get a fully furnished house and maybe have to walk a dog or summat and it fills the gap whilst looking for a good rental or a house to buy.
Anyone any experience of this at all?
I quite often see postcards in shop windows offering to house sit or wanting a house sitter.
A googled and found these links for starters.
Homesit NZ
Home Carers
Happy House Sitters.

Re: House sitting in NZ - an alternative to a rental/motel
We use house sitters every time we go away. For a weekend down in Auckland or something, to a month travelling round the SI.
There's no way we would ever get a break if it wasn't for lovely house sitters
It's a great idea.

but the people that house sit are vetted and vouched for before they can be let loose in anyones house. would they be ok with total strangers descending on their homes?

Re: House sitting in NZ - an alternative to a rental/motel
House sitting is very common in New Zealand.
People that offer to house sit don't necessarily come through 'agencies'. As I said in a previous post, many do the postcards in shop windows thing or put a classified ad in a local paper etc.
Offering a character ref or two and perhaps a copy of your UK and NZ police check would be a way to go.
House swaps for holidays happen too.
