A house in Auckland-or an island in fiji or norway

Aucklanders are paying premium prices for average houses to be close to the city and good school zones. Alanah Eriksen in the NZ herald looked at 10 private islands around the world that cost less than homes in central Auckland.

For the same price as a 3-brm do-up in Grey Lynn, a lower middle-class suburb in central Auckland you could buy a whole island of your own near Ontario Canada, or if the tropics is more your thing, you could buy a whole island in the Carribean with a resort and staff, for the same price as a family house in more upmarket Remuera - (as the house in remuera sells for 3.75 million kiwi).

Read more examples here - what do you think?

I don't think anyone would disagree that many parts of Auckland have become very expensive in the last few years. I wouldn't really describe Grey
Lynn as lower middle-class though. I know it pretty well and (clearly, from house prices) you need to be pretty well-off to live there now.

Obviously you could buy an island in Fiji or Norway for the same price but you couldn't really travel from there in 5-10 minutes to your job in the Auckland CBD, could you? Location, location, location and all that.

I think it would be a heck of a commute.
The very reason some parts of Auckland are so mental-high is because they are considered highly desirable (I don't grt it but folk seem to pay it, so it must be true) whereas crazy islands with no reasonable work prospects (and staff- ugh!- what a nasty colonial fantasy!) are less desirable outside of fantasy world.

PS "" is useful for letting ppl know what you've directly quoted from an article and what's your own writing.

I did some work on a few houses in Grey lynn a couple of years ago, they were selling
for low to mid 700's for modernised houses in good condition.
Where has the extra 6 to 700k come from?

I wonder if everyone in Auckland realises the rest of the country is pissing its sides laughing them,
I mean, 1.2 million or this POS :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Oh my goodness, this never happens any where else in the world apart from Auckland, NZ.

Not.

Auckland is less affordable than New York and London - that is the issue here. Auckland being more desirable than the major cities on this earth? Really? Nah, I don't believe it. I think that it is bad politics that allowed the prices to get out of hand, together with the inflexibility of the Kiwi mind which is fixed on having to own a house or two or three.

Shortage is the major reason for the current situation in Auckland

That pic Justcol put up is pretty much your standard 3-bedder now for less than 500-600K in Auckland. Wooden, Tin Roof, Damp and mould.

Assanah's quote is spot on. Bellasmum - also bang on. Its of no surprise that a good number of John Key's cabinet have property portfolios as well.

While people like to believe its a "shortage" its more ordinary people on ordinary income wish to upgrade to higher lifestyle.

That's not to say wanting more is necessarily bad. But people should be more specific about housing price growth. Its more about expectations.

Too many people are now bringing into account capital appreciation as income (in their minds). While other opportunities go past them:sneaky:

The house will be worth what the people will pay for it! supply and demand ! if there were more properties available the prices would drop....no politics no magic formulae's just simple basics. Chch property prices and rents rose because of the same simple reasons. One million Kiwi dollars equates to £500k look a bit closer at London detached house prices. My little detached 2 bedroom bungalow in the Midlands Warwickshire is valued at £365k why? because that is what people will pay for it!
The Kiwi mindset of self property ownership is the same as most Brits were brought up with, I know things are different in Germany but that is what our parents instilled in us....something to pass on to the kids.

I would buy the island in fiji, have you guys been there? OMG paradise, and the fijian people the loveliest people you could ever meet, I would just sit in a hammock with my fiji bitter at the end of another hard day of sunbathing and swimming and occasionally for a laugh, read the internet about auckland house prices and think "you poor buggers"

love it. 3 guys have handed in their notice where i work in the past week.

1 wanted a career change, however the other 2 have had enough of the housing situation in auckland so are leaving. they both earn six figures, but cannot afford to buy here. 1 is off to raglan, the other - hamilton. both taken paycuts but can now each can buy their first home.

I believe its just the start, well done greedy landlords and corrupt politicians!

Yes, but what job are you going to do on your Fijian island to pay for your hammock, beer and Internet access? ;)

Yes, Auckland housing is becoming difficult to afford. Many big cities are the same. I believe Sydney and Melboirne are very pricey now. I saw on Sky News yesterday that the average price of a property in London is £544,000. Obviously I'm not saying Auckland is the same as London - but they are both the biggest city in their respective countries, with the most opportunities and jobs. So they will attract people.

Plus, London has a good network of trains, buses and tubes to commute in from further out. Auckland's public transport is not brilliant, making living in the inner suburbs even more attractive.
