I'd stay in the Hong Kong Plaza in Hung Hom on Kowloon if you can afford it. Next to the ferry and a very very nice hotel on the waterfront. Excellent location although not right in the centre.

HK Disneyland is for VERY young kids only Id suggest. Ocean Park is better all round - but get there early! (take a taxi through the Aberdeen Tunnel).

Walk through all the MongKok markets - Birds,Flowers, Goldfish, clothes, watches, junk , you name it.

Take the enormous cable car to the top of Lantau Island and see that massive Buddha thing.

My Mum, Sister, Niece (13), Nephew (8) and Aunt were in HK last week. They stayed in the Holiday Inn, Kowloon which my Mum said was lovely (she's quite fussy). It has a roof top pool, which was lovely after a hard days sight seeing. They went on a sampan trip in the harbour, visited the night markets, travelled on the underground (superb), used the Star Ferry and generally had a fantastic time. They were there for 6 nights and would love to go again.

We stayed at The Salisbury YMCA Hong Kong as we were strapped for cash - it worked out at about $75NZ for the ensuite room with views over the harbour so you could watch the light show at night. You can get even cheaper rooms but without the views. It is clean and quiet with a great location. But is not like a Holiday Inn!

The Salisbury - YMCA of Hong Kong is situated at the tip of Kowloon Peninsula with magnificent views of Victoria Harbour and Hong Kong Island. The hotel is in prime location of business, shopping and entertainment district of Tsimshatsui. It is within walking distance from Nathan Road, Hong Kong shoppers' paradise and also various attractions. The Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the Hong Kong Space Museum, Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Clock Tower, Waterfront Promenade and Avenue of Stars are located just next to the hotel. Star Ferry and Ocean Terminal are a stroll away from the hotel while Hong Kong International Airport is a 40-minute drive away.

If you want first rate but reasonably priced accommodation it has to be the The Salisbury YMCA on Kowloon. Don't write it off until you look further. It offers the same location as the Sheraton for less $$. It is waterfront and walking distance to the Star Ferry. You can book large ensuite rooms that look straight out onto the Hong Kong vista which is spectacular at night. This YMCA has all the facilities of a hotel. Couldn't fault it at all.
