Default Home Baker Help Needed

Hi All

I want to make dumplings but I can't find any suet! Is it called suet here? Where can I buy it? Also, what is Chef's Aid? and what would I use it for?

Many thanks, Mandie xx

I bought suet in the Pom shop up here Have you tried Pak&Save? We don't have one here but am reliably informed that if you look in their international aisle, it should be there

If you can't find suet try these:

1+1/4 cups flour
1hpd tsp baking powder
75g butter
pinch of herbs or grated cheese
cold water to mix

Sift baking powder & flour then rub in butter. Add the herbs or cheese & enough cold water to form a soft dough.Roll out and either cover dish or do as I do & cut into circles. Bake at 200degC for 15 mins

In Countdown in Kaiapoi it is kept in the aisle with the oils, its in a margarine tub. The one I bought was called Shreddo (quality shortening), there is also one called kremalta (or something like that). I made some dumplings with this, they tasted OK to me but then it has been years since Ive had any.

Hello everyone,

Since we're talking about food, can anybody help me? Am desperate to make some proper mashed potato but everytime I try and do this, we end up eating lumpy gloop, have never had any trouble making it in London, so guessing I'm using the wrong type of potato!!! Duh... help?!

You need to buy a non waxy pototo for mashing. Ask in any shop or supermarket (tis the same in England you must have been lucky)

Hi,
You will get suet in an english shop. Failing that shreddo looks remarkably similar.

Desiree, Ilam Hardy, Rua, Karaka, Rocket, Sebago, Maris Anchor, Nadine, Jersey Bennie, Draga, Red Rascal - all good potatoes for mash. Nadines seem to be good for everything, although they're not recommended for baking or roasting they seem to do both really well and are yummy!

Erm... I've always used US Idaho gold. Not much help eh? I only ever add marg or butter, and some grated cheddar. No milk or anything. Good luck in your search!

Hay

The best way to get that perfect, smooth mashed potato is as follows:-

Write to your friends in the UK and get them to post you a large bag of SMASH

Instant creamy mashed potato with no lumps
