Hobbies you started in NZ?
Sometimes we find we can do leisure things here that were not really available easily where we came from, wherever that was. I wondered what you have learnt to do/started since being in NZ?
First of all, I learnt to ride a horse. Now that might seem simple but I had never been near one. We went to a school near here, for just $50 all morning, and they showed me how to catch my horse for the day from the paddock, walk it to the yard, groom it, clean its hooves, saddle up - and that as all before I even got on it. By the time I had done all that it was MY horse and I loved it  Then I had my first ever lesson, and then we had a trek. Then I groomed it again, and put it back in the field. Awesome.:thumbsup: Secondly, I joined a dog agility club with one of our dogs. Well two actually, but one of them is useless as she barks and lunges at the other dogs all the time  Anyway I've learnt training tips and dog psychology stuff that is amazing, and all our four dogs are better behaved for it. Plus, getting my lovely blue merle collie round a ring in a proper competition is now a serious goal for me, and he's well on the way. All for $60 a year, for as many dogs as I want. Awesome.:thumbsup: What about you? Jan |

I'm an active Toastmaster here. In the UK, I thought Toastmasters were those blokes in red jackets who MC at posh events. Here it's all about talking and listening!

Watching roaches climb the wall ...... Far better than watching TV1. TV2, TV3, 4, Maori, TeReo, Prime, U, yawn.....yawn.....ooo this looks better....
Now watching the biggest NZ insect of that type, the Prime Minister, on Parliament channel.......scuttling...dodging...diving.....etc trying to weasel out of what his chief of staff did...and how he may have misled the house.... ...like a teflon-coated-roach.....bet he can't climb a wall, he is far too slippy.....;) |
Re: Hobbies you started in NZ?
seriously though:
darning sewing making cakes walking from one boring place to another cycling fixing the car myself fixing other stuff myself learning new songs - here's a pretty funny one from 2011: Wellington’s awesome Gold Medal Famous ---- Lyrics: Verse 1: 20% of children live in poverty The country stands to lose $39 million on the rugby His Cabinet Ministers don’t know how to behave And all John Key does is smile and wave Chorus: John Key is a dEck Being popular makes him tick John Key thinks he’s cool But you can’t trust a currency trader fool Verse 2: The highest inflation since 1990 Worse performing universities Flawed standards being introduced into schools John Key jokes on Letterman and thinks he’s cool Verse 3: Using failed policies of the 1990s And debunked economic theories of the 1970s The public service is being gutted And about the All Blacks John Key can’t shut up Verse 4: Claiming New Zealand is 100% pure when studies show our water is not Appearing illogical And not answering questions properly On Hard Talk on the BBC When will New Zealand journalists interview the PM properly? Verse 5: Building roads of “national significance” through someone’s house Invoking dictatorial powers about earthquakes and rugby And ramming them through the house John Key likes using urgency He shows contempt for democracy |
Re: Hobbies you started in NZ?
Actually thought of one.....
Coaching and running sports teams, plus playing football again. Counted up 14 kids' teams I have coached in the past 6 winters and summers for my two kids. Football and cricket. Plus I used to help run a men's winter football team and run a men's summer team. At least we can play football here on decent pitches and have lots of fun doing it and getting together as mates whenever we fancy. |
Re: Hobbies you started in NZ?
I took up wood turning and cabinet making. My only complaint is the price of timber, particularly when it's all I can see from my window.:D

Taken up cooking as a hobby. Thoroughly enjoy making cusiine that we'd never even think of back home
Am also considering taking up fishing in order to have weekend camps in Arthurs Pass with the family. |
Re: Hobbies you started in NZ?
Voluntary work. Mostly to keep my spirits up as I'm unemployed. In Britain it was an occasional spare time thing.
Here, it's part of me managing my mental health. |
