Hi
Just found this site and wanted to say hi, OH is a joiner I am a secretary and we have 2 kids and are looking into moving into NZ.
Is there plenty of work for joiners and if so is there a particular area thats busiest or central from which to travel from, know this is like asking how long is a piece of string but.......I think one of the hardest things is deciding where to live. Also what sort of wage would oh expect to earn, he does all aspects (as he puts it) i.e. shuttering, 1st, 2nd & final fix, shopfitting, roofing to name but a few. The only problem we can see is that he has only got his first part city and guilds, but he does have 25 years experience (44) would this make it difficult.
Cheers

Re: Hi
If you mean which areas are busy for this sort of employment I'd hazard to guess that one would be knocking back work in most areas if one is a good tradesman.
At any rate, I can only give you a general look and if I haven't exactly answered your questions satisfactorily do ask more as others here might be able to give you more detailed answers.
All the best and good luck.

Re: Hi
Macd a relative recently got a good job in construction through seek link. I haven't looked at closely but you may find it helpful.

The boatbuilding industry is fairly robust here in Auckland and you may also like to look at that.

Kia Ora and welcome to this forum.
There are a few other chippies on here.
Yorksha - who has just arrived & is working in Wanaka which is lower South Island.
Red Monsk - waiting to arrive
Heal - waiting to arrive
Krissie - already here and working
and Kags1694
Carpenter and Joiner is on the NZIS long-term shortage list. Your hubby will have no problem at all in finding work wherever you choose to settle. As a tradesman on the long-term shortage list you can have the pick of where you end up, just as we did. My husband is a plumber. We now live in a village outside of Nelson. Top of the South Island . We chose it for its size and weather.
Where you may settle will depend on what you are hoping to achieve by the move. Do you want to be near or in a city? A small town. What about weather.
There is no one place that would be better than another for a chippy . You may find your choice is governed by house prices or the lifestyle you are hoping to achieve for your family.
As you have C&G 1 only , you should get a pre-assessment done via NZQA. They will tell you what level your qualification is recognised at. As you don't have the advanced certificate , you will not be able to claim bonus points. The likelihood is that the level will come back as a Level 3 and I believe this will allow you to claim 50 points for a basic trade skill on your Expression of Interest - EOI.
How many points do you have on the POINTS INDICATOR?
Will you need a job offer to get enough points ?

Bev, at the moment we live Middleton, North Manchester not too busy but with easy access to city centre so would probably be looking for something similar, cheap housing because want some money left at the end of the month. Good schools are very important because we have a 9 and 5 year old. But there are soooooo many nice places too choose from, it really gives me a headache researching them all. Oh has a friend who lives at North Shore who has said that he will put us up for a while (must be mad) while we have a scout round.
I'm sure I'll be back with some more queries.

Good schools are to be found everywhere.
How much would you be wanting to spend on a house then ? In your minds eye that is. That may well dictate where you end up, once you have looked at the regions and their weather.

Re: Hi
Happynz, wouldnt necessarily want to live Auckland just that oh's friend is there and would put us up while we travel/scout about, probably would be too expensive from what I've seen.
Like the look/sound of Hamilton, Cambridge, but still looking at work in these areas for both of us.
I don't drive, planning to start lessons in Sept, so this at the moment is a big factor to where we live.
As I said it is so hard to choose
Cheers

Do get your car licence. Public transport is not New Zealand's strength.
Good luck.
