$20 / hr is actually not a bad return for HGV1 (class 5) driving. not particularly good wage, but its close to the going rate.
minimum wage is $13.50 for adults, so you are approx 50% over that. Just so you know, they run an "honour" system here, using logbooks instead of a tacho, just make sure your future employer doesnt try to give you two at a time

I don't have a clue what HGV drivers earn in the UK. If you are presently on less than 10 pounds an hour now, then you'll be best placed to appreciate yourself what it would be like in NZ on a similar wage.
$20 per hour on 40 hour week only gives you $41,600 gross per year, which is a low income and not enough to get you a work visa.
NZ Immigration have a minimum income level of $55k that you would have to achieve in order to be granted a work visa, along with a whole bunch of other criteria you'd have to meet. That earnings level is set because anything below that threshold is not considered enough to be a viable living wage.

Sounds like a very reasonable rate for HGV here on the South Island. It's not a great rate of pay though & you need to consider where you will be based. Some places are more expensive to live than others.. Are you coming alone or with family?
You will be able to apply for a temp work visa as HGV is in immediate shortage. It's always in shortage because of the rates of pay basically. The thing for you to consider though is how you go on to remain in NZ if you are looking to remain here permanently.
HGV is not seen as a skilled occupation so unless you can find HGV employment offering you around $55K per year for approx a 40 hour week, you would have to remain at the mercy of renewable temp work visas which doesn't offer much in the way of a secure NZ future.
