Re: Help....New Zealand or Australia????
The quote above is a pretty good one.
But it's pretty much the same standards for NZ. You choose NZ if you want friendlier people, perhaps far less competition for work, a CLEANER place anywhere you go compared to Australia, and perhaps cheaper too.
Australia is often a choice because its bigger, people think NZ is too small (only geographically, not smaller than an individual of course), it has pretty much the same opportunities as NZ. NZ is a better choice, UNLESS you are more comfortable with being in a BIGGER place. People often think small of NZ because of its geographical make-up.

IMO the weather, the houses and the standard of living is far better here.
That's just my opinion and others will feel differently, just bear in mind there's a reason why half a million Kiwis live here and there's only 4 million people in New Zealand - a sizable proportion of which are immigrants.

Hahaha, poor old BB- I'm guessing you don't live in NZ robbyarg? A buzzy bee is an iconic NZ toy, a piece of kiwiana if you like. It was from an era where toys were not marketed so heavily toward gender stereotypes and would have been popular with boys and girls. Now it tends to represent the enduring image of NZ as somewhere pioneering and quirky and quintessentially kiwi.

Cmon mate. Don't be so harsh He's cool. He just may be a bit too patriotic.
And NZ is the home of the 'All Blacks' who are my favourite team. So NZ rocks (at least in that sense).

Why do so many people go on about Australia as it if is the holy blinkin' grail of places to live in the world? You only have to browse through the forum and read some of the blogs to see that it isn't. Never seen the appeal of living there myself but it works for some - and then again not others.
I remember quite some time ago people asking why NZ over Oz and vice versa and one poster replying that like comparing apples and oranges, still vs sparkling water. Each country is unique with its own identity, difficult issues and wonderful things about it. Lucky us to even be in the position to be able to choose

I'd say comparing Australia to New Zealand is a bit like comparing the whole of Europe to Ireland - completely different 'ball parks.'
Don't make the direct comparison is my advice. Just go for the one which suits you the best and gives you what you want out of life with the minimum of compromise.

Re: Help....New Zealand or Australia????
Well if you want hot, stuffy, and full of horrid creepy crawlies - and vastly inflated housing prices and cost of living then Australia would be great as it would be no different from NZ in that regard
Unlike some others I've never ever had the desire to live or work in Australia, boring boring boring. It's way too blinkin' big but not in a good way like the US or Canada which are of course huge but have lots of different places within them (O Caaanada, maybe one day ). It is, apart from the fringes, one huge desert. But then again if you haven't experienced much of Oz and you can just go with no ties then it may be better to see first, as you already sound like you know more about NZ. As a nurse you'll be able to get work quite easily in both countries I should imagine? There is a salary difference though but then I'm guessing you didn't go into nursing because it pays megabucks? It depends on what your motivations are.
And I am quite pleasantly surprised by how un-backward I've found NZ thus far, despite the best efforts of some to try and convice people otherwise. If you're going to maroon yourself in Gore, for example, then it's going to be rather different to somewhere like Auckland. It's also just a different way of doing things. Having looked through some of the posts on the Australian forum, and through some of my own experiences, I wouldn't say that some areas were any less hicksville sometimes than NZ or the UK, America etc. Good luck.

Re: Help....New Zealand or Australia????
I lived in perth 24years ago and found it very remote. the nearest town being 3 hours drive away and a drive out into the country was monotonous. Gum tree after gum tree for miles. I wanted to get on every plane that flew over just for a change of scenery. melbourne and Sydney I've revisited recently and found them way too crowded and commercialised but I

Re your last comment me too, I like the quiet life, but there is sufficient enough going on here in my region to keep me and many others happy and occupied.

Again with the continental Europe comparison: this is like saying you don't want to live in Europe because Paris and Rome are so busy and you like the quiet life.
There's a lot more to Australia than three major cities. Genesis I know you've expressed in interest in Tasmania but have you ever visited Byron Bay or Coffs Harbour?

Re: Help....New Zealand or Australia????
My 18 year old has just moved to Perth.
She got the first job she went for, just walked in to a cafe she liked the look of. It's a much more generous wage than she had here. Her rent seems expensive, but then they have chosen to live in a really nice, hip area! They bought a crap car for $1000 which is all they need. As they've not made any friends yet they are just hanging out at the beach, or going out for meals. It's averaging 38 degrees at the moment.
She says, other than the temperature, it's really not all that different from where we live in NZ. They are young and they wanted a change. Why not.
