Help!!! Importing the Car
Hi folks,
We are moving out in Feb'08. We are debating on whether to bring the car, it was bought in '07.
Is it worth bringing it over or should we sell it? What are price of cars like? Any body know about the paper work involved?
Any help would really be appreciated.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards
Donna

No personal experience of this but try and search other threads on here re importing as there are some really detailed accounts.
From memory I think you've got to have owned it for 12 months or more to avoid duty. It'll need steam cleaning inside and out.
Loads and loads of car lots here. You can get really good old ones for not too many $$$ up to brand new. Loads of affordable Jap imports. And majority where I live anyway go for 4x4 because sometimes the hot seal roads just run out and turn to gravel (this includes some 'main' roads!).
Personally, I wouldn't pay to import a car. Before we left UK we sold our beloved PT Cruisers and a Nissan Navara, all newish and shiny and immaculate. We now have a 1992 Mitsubishi Pajero we paid under $8k for which is great for off-roading, fishing and as our main car.
Cars don't rust here. They don't salt the roads. So you'll see Mk1 Escorts, Cortinas and Capri's all still driving round like new! There's even a Ford Prefect that looks immaculate driving round locally.

If you have any Spanish speaking mates coming to visit and you pick them up in your Pajero be prepared for them to have a chuckle at your expense. Paja means masturbate. So, theoretically, as the ero is at the end, meaning that it is a masculine word denoting someone who is engaged in the act of something, pajero would mean, well, erm...masturbator.

Yep, I know! But if you saw my driving skills (or lack of), you might think it rather appropriate

If you bought the car in '07 you will probably have to pay import duty - you have to have owned the car for 12 months.

I looked into exporting my car - and didn't in the end. Shipping the car from Portsmouth to Auckland was going to cost £900, but getting it on a transporter from Edinburgh to Portsmouth £1000! Add-in the paperwork hassles, and charges at NZ side - its not worth it.
Rental cars are cheap here - $20 (ish) a day, so easy to sort transport while your looking for a replacement. Once you've experienced the sort of driving you're liable to do here - you may want a different sort of car too! Lots of hills - some dirt/gravel/beach roads..

In NZ the police receive a bonus for each speeding ticket (and parking tickets) that they "score", consequently you end up with lots of speeding tickets, having a car is quite important here, but beware !
