Default Help for Auckland suburbs

Visas are just about sorted and winging their way to us from the Immigration Consultant in NZ. All a formality now and will be back with us from NZ Immigration by the end of August. Hubbie's job could now be based out of the CBD not North Shore so need to look at other areas to live. We want to live close to good schools but close enough for an easy (ish) commute. Howick and Half Moon Bay look good - anyone know these areas or other places that would fit the bill? Also if we do move around a bit how easy is it to take kids in and out of schools. Don't want to have to do this as will be unsettling for the little cuties but just wondered if it was easy or not. Thanks.

Have you got an idea of where the job might be ie type of work?

We still have houses in Bucklands Beach/Howick and know you would enjoy the area. The schools are also highly recommended.

If you work in the city the commute from Howick area is about an hour.

Hi Jane
We've recently (5 weeks ago) moved to our house in Howick and we feel it's everything we could want - i.e. both the house and the suburb. My hubby occasionally has to travel into the CBD for work and if it's during rush hour it can take approx an hour so this could be a problem.

We spent a while looking at different suburbs before we decided on Howick but the first time we drove into it, it just felt "right". From our house everything we want is within a 5 minute drive - large shopping centre, cinemas, ice skating, swimming pools (apparently free! not used them yet though), beaches, doctors, hospital, etc, etc. According to the book "Where to Live in Auckland" 11 of the 13 schools in Howick have decile ratings of 9 and 10 (perhaps if you are not sure about these ratings somebody will be better than I at explaining them!!!)

Hope that helps but ask away if there's anything else.

The decile just refers to the amount of funding put in by parents. Higher decile, more put in = better equipment, extra teachers etc. It is not about the quality of teaching. We started our daughter in a decile 10, then moved house where she went to a decile 7 school which we think is a much better school.

Quite right a decile 10 certainly does not mean it is a better school. However my children attend a decile 10. The school recieves around $330,000 less a year from the government than a decile 1 of comparable size. Parents are expected to make up the difference in donations and endless fund raising. Hiya
Hubby will be working for a recruitment company in the centre of Auckland, but after so many helpfull replies i think Howick and Bucklands Beach will be too far out.

There are some lovely areas closer to the city, Parnell, Grey Lynn, Mt Eden, Remuera. But. Smaller sections and more expensive, unless you want to go for bigger sections and REALLY expensive . Starting at 8am, traffic will be lighter - but cripes, that's a long day. I don't know the names of the schools, only that there are a lot of really good ones (or at least high decile ones).
Cheers

Outside of rush hour Howick is around 20-25 mins to CBD less from north Pakuranga. From Half Moon Bay/ Bucklands Beach there is a regular ferry service (very civilised way to travel) disembarking a short walk to the CBD. Cheers binman
