hello from Birmingham
hello!
Just thought I would say Hi and introduce myself. I am Mich and myself and hubby are looking at coming over to Tauranga in the next 6 months (always the optimist) I am currently registering with the NZ nursing board which should be sorted in the next month or so. Whenever I ring them to chase up my application my frustration soon disappears....its a bit like talking with Kath and Kim! Hopefully they will process it all soon!
We came out to NZ in Feb 07 for a whistle stop tour of both Islands. We really liked Tauranga and the Mount and we are looking to move there once I get a job and a working visa.
We have just put our house on the market and plan to sell everything. Its so liberating and exciting at the same time! We had some quotes from removal companies but we worked out that our furniture was only really worth half the amount of the quote (No, Im not pulling the poor nurse card!) so we have decides to sell up!
We are bringing our cat Ben (he is already getting into role and answers to the name Bin) Gaawwd! Sorry about the bad jokes! Golden arrow are our favourite choice at the mo.
My other half is a carpenter (has no official qualifications) but will hopefully get work when we are out there.
Anyway, would love to meet up with people in Tauranga when we arrive. We are in our mid thirties with no children (yet!) and would really love to get to know new people of any age

Re: hello from Birmingham
Hi Chris and Allan,
Thank you for your reply!
I would describe Tauranga as a small city, a bit like Cheltenham or Oxford really. It has some lovely suburbs, mostly close to the beach.
I read somewhere that its nickname is "the place for the newly weds and the nearly deads" which is quite amusing! So I guess you could interpret that its a bit of a sleepy town. We live in the busy city of Brum so we ideally want to live somewhere not too quiet but not manic like Birmingham.
We found the people there really friendly and helpful whilst we were travelling.
Its a lovely clean city and the cost of living is very reasonable.
Hope this helps and good luck with your mission

Hi Mich
Just a quick line to say hello to a fellow nurse and if you need any help just ask. Someone on here is bound to have asked before or if not somebody usually knows the answer. Never think your question is daft and never be afraid to ask. We've all been there as well remember.Welcome to the forum

We are living in Papamoa and I work in the Mount. By birth Hubby is a Kiwi, but grew up in Birmingham ...
Tauranga is a big area, you'll need to narrow it down!
We shipped out 2 dogs and used Airpets who were fantastic they do cats too.
Oh and we have pretty regular piss ups, I mean meet ups!

Re: hello from Birmingham
Hi Mich,
a belated 'alright?' from a fellow Brummie girl (also a nurse)
Which part of Brum are you in? I've defected and am up in sunny Wales but was down 'ome recently for a family 'do' - I'm speaking like a native again
You won't have a problem with finding work - you'll be fighting them off! Good luck with it all.

Hi Am loolah!
Ooooh piss ups in Papamoa sounds fab!!!
I have to say, we only spent 24 hours in Tauranga and the Mount but we felt good vibes there, more so than anywhere else in NZ. We didnt have a chance to look around in the suburbs of Tauranga or Papamoa so we are open to any suggestions of where to live. Is it a good place to live?
Im getting excited....the house has gone on the market and its just waiting, waiting and more waiting! I am v optimistic though so hopefully it will be a self fulfilling prophecy!
Cheers Am Loolah

Re: hello from Birmingham
Oh My God! The Bear at Bearwood - saw many a good night in there!!!! and what's the one on the main road, on the corner of the lights, was it the King or something similar? Probably long gone by now but it was a good venue in it's time. It was a million years ago when I used to frequent that neck of the woods to see various mates in pub bands.
Who can forget the infamous Goats Don't Shave, True Grit and Totally Suspect who all haled from that side of town (though I think you're a bit young for them)? Ahhh the good ol' days
Life in Wales int 'alf bad - but hoping to get to Dunedin and teach them all to order Arfur Bitta like natives . Don't think I'll move back to the midlands (I hail from Sheldon/Yardley) although you never can tell and I have family there still. But I'll always love being a Brummie cos we'm ace Oh yeh, and cos we know what GAMBOLS are

Re: hello from Birmingham
He'll be a real yam yam then! My brother lives near Dudley - so he's picked up the blackcountry accent. It never ceases to amaze me at how quickly I revert 'Brummie' when I go for a quick visit home. Mind you, I have a tendancy to pick up accents - OH told me off after a half hour 'phone call to my new boss the other week for raising my inflection at the end of my sentences. I'll be saying 'eh' and 'bro' before you know it ...
