Hello all! - Doctor in the House (from Dundee)
Hi everyone,
my name is Claire and myself and my partner currently live in Dundee, Scotland. We have started to look in to the possibility of immigrating to New Zealand because the cost of living and job opportunities seem better for my partner over there.
I have some questions if you all don't mind!
My partner is a doctor and wants to finish his 2 years as a junior doctor in the UK. I'm hoping there are other doctors on the board that can answer a few questions we have. To be honest we are probably looking to make a permanent move and my partner Chris is unsure how the doctor training works in NZ.
Does anyone know if he would be able to take up a specialist training post over there? He doesn't want to move until he knows that he can actually advance his career and be trained up to a consultant. We have contacted the Australian and New Zealand colleges of medicine but are still waiting to hear back!
We think we will probably go over there with him as the primary applicant through one of the medical recruitment agencies who assure us that the process is fairly straightforward and hopefully go from there.
Anywho, Im totally rambling! I will leave it at this and than you for having me!

I'm thinking that if the process is fairly straightforward do you need to use an agency?? Sure someone will be along to give you advice soon. Hold on to your money for now!

Well the bizarre thing is that because doctors are in short supply etc they are offering to all the visa stuff for us for nothing as long as he stays in the job they get him for at least 12 months. Were not looking to go Until August next year so we will have some time to save

Hello.
Yes, speciality training in NZ for your partner would be no problem in terms of meeting competencies/requirements. However, I don't know how competitive the programs are.

You might want to check out this article in the NZ Herald to catch up on the recent news about Junior Doctors striking over here:

but you will find that there is something of a demand for him:
