Healthcare
Hi all, can anybody give their advise/recommendations regarding private Healthcare.
We have our residence visas and should be arriving mid December (me, wife and three kids, 11,8,5).
Do you think it necessary, worthwhile and if so any recommendations.
Thanks for any comments.

Re: Healthcare
The main Healthcare in NZ is "Southern Cross".
Some people have medical cover and I would say the majority don't. When I looked into it for a family of 4 it was approx $200pm. SOme companies sub Healthcare benefits which helps so when applying for a job ask if they have health cover.
For an example ,I went to my GP and he referred me to a Heart specialist.
I had the chocie to go either public or private. I don't have medical Insurance and decided I didn't want to wait (6wks or more) if I went to a public Hospital so I went privately. The cost to me to see the specialist for a clean bill of health was $600.00, it was my choice.
There is no healthcare for orthodonist treatment in NZ. If your child were to have braces you would be looking at between $4-$6k which can be paid off also it pays to shop around as prices vary.
Normal dental treatment is FREE upto the age of 18 providing your child is still in school. This is normally only a yearly appointment, if you were concerned then just take them along to the school dental clinic.
Doctors fees vary from $18 - 60 per Adult, pays you to shop around too. Children under 6 FREE, over 6 $5-42. You also pay for presciption charges.
If you have PR and salary was upto $50k you can claim Family assistance benefit. Checkout www.workingforfamilies.govt.nz
hope this helps

I'm in shock and having a mild panic attack - my two eldest 14 and 11 both have braces and the eldest has about another 12 months treatment and the 11 year old about 18-24 months. Are you serious I'm looking at paying like $8,000 + for them - before we even get to the 2 youngest who look like they'll need them later on too?! Is there no means tested relief for low incomes?
Thanks.
