Default Health insurance Yes or no?

Is health insurance necessary and if so any idea of the cost and a decent company to give my money to?

In my opinion, healthcare systems( and waiting list) in NZ are more or less the same like the UK, so if you need one in the UK, then you need one here too.

But if you're here on work visa less than 2 yrs, you definitely need health insurance.

Disclaimer: I worked for NHS and now working for one of the DHB (District Health Board) in NZ

Because healthcare is not free if you are on a work visa that is less than 2 yrs

If you are here on a tourist visa or work permit (less than 2 yrs), then you are eligible for immediately necessary care only(under reciprocal agreement) ie.appendicitis, chronic illness follow-up isn't covered under the reciprocal arrangement with the UK. Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) will pay out for treatment for anyone if they are accidently incapacitated while in NZ (and the definition of an 'accident' seems pretty broad - deliberate self harmers turn up under ACC coverage!). If you are a permanent resident you are eligible for the same coverage as native kiwis.

Sovereign - around $112 a month for a family of four - a steal, everyone should pay it.

I am coming out on WTR. This visa is for 30 Months...Does this mean we will qualify for free (as such) healthcare. The same as the Native Kiwi?

Cheers

Check with the Medical Insurance companies in NZ as some require you to have PR to be eligible for a payout on a claim. This is something they dont always tell you up front or have on their website.
