Default Health Insurance???

Having always relied on the NHS ( and not able to afford the luxury of BUPA!!), I'm interested to know what people class as priority when it comes to Health Insurance.

We have 3 kids, no illnesses that we would require cover for ( fingers crossed) & would have be looking for the most comprehensive cover we could afford, but how much would looking at? My initial search suggests around $300 per month for all of us. Does that sound right? ( By the way, we're both non smokers)

All positive & negative ( helpful tho') comments welcome.

Thanks
Sarah

As we seem to be lacking in the advice department at the moment I have begun my research and so far I have come accross this: http://www.inform.co.nz/health-insur...FQq2SgodXFbhPQ
which may or may not prove to be useful.

It's a start at least!

Hi Guys,
I think that the health service here is better than the Uk, the kiwis moan and say that they had to wait a few months for an op but I think the waiting time is still less than the UK.

The system is different in that you pay to see the GP (only $10 - @20) but after that you don't pay if you get refered. I think this works well as it keeps a lot of the time wasters away - you don't want to pay for a GP to tell you that you have a cold so you don't waste their time.

I went to the hospital a couple of years ago with an ear problem and was looked after there and then , they kept me in over the weekend and I saw a specialist on the Monday - I thought that was good.

We have recently taken out health insurance with a good policy that covers all events after the GP ie hospital visits, ops etc. but we did not go for the dental option. It costs $40 every two weeks - we are both fit non smokers 38 and 40 years old, however I think that they loaded the policy a bit as I have cancer in my family.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Darren

Thanks Mcuddy for that.

I had heard of Southern Cross before. Think I'm right in saying that we get 3rd child covered for free!!!!

Kev gets cover through Tower but not clear in his job offer if we could extend that to all of us, and don't want to tempt fate by making an enquiry with them yet

Would still recommend Sourthern Cross TBH.
You can get family cover (up to 21 years of age ) for around $1200 a year.

We thought we had sorted ours through DH work. Paperwork turned up yesterday; cancelled by lunchtime

They wanted $100 a month more than on their paperwork and were gonna backdate their direct debit to April (another $1000!!) Nothing from them to say we had been covered all this time.
