Hairdresser wanting to Emigrate & start up own salon
Hi all, just wanted to get some feedback, I'm looking to Emigrate to New Zealand and open a salon of my own, any suggestions for pro's and cons. Ideally looking for a salon that will appeal to the families, where mum can come and be pampered, but Dad and kids can also come for a chilled out experience. 😁

Hi. Unfortunately its not that easy. The first thing you need to do is find out whether you can get a visa. Is hairdressing on the skilled shortage list? Will your plans get you in on a business visa? Do you have a very large sum of money to invest? I would guess the visa would be difficult based on what you have outlined but I might be wrong.

can't find it on the skills list so the only way I believe would be through investment or entrepreneurs but both of them require a large amount of money and I think you would need to show that you have run your own business previously and made a success of it.
unless you have a partner who has some skills ?

sorry meant not on any of the shortage lists and doesn't appear on Appendix 6, http://www.immigration.govt.nz/opsmanual/35165.htm< of the skilled occupations so do not believe you can apply down the skilled route?

As before, yes both above were copied and pasted from Appendix 6 - need to look a little further down than Part A but they are there.

As others have said, you'll find it a struggle.
No occupation to do with hairdressing is on any of the 3 skill shortage lists therefore you'll be unable to claim enough points on the eoi for a resident visa via Skilled Migrant route unless you have a partner that has a skilled occupation and you can go on as the secondary applicant.
Since you want to open your own business and be your own boss I see your only option as the investor route where you will need a minimum $1.5M to invest in a business for at least 4 years plus another $1M in settlement funds and show that you have these funds as money in the bank and/or assets to the value without any debts. You'll also have to provide a sound business plan and show evidence that you have run a successful business in the past. Even if you can prove all this the timescales for these types of visas are years.
Sorry, probably not what you want to hear but the reality of migration to NZ.
Maybe check out the INZ website.

Might be easier to try and find work as a hairdresser first, get residence and then go to running your own place.

he specialises in business visas might find you one that's up for sale or advise which might be the best way forward, I have spoke and met him when we were in Tauranga, hes a very nice man and his fees are very good, it never worked out for us , but it might for you talk to him before you spend loads of money

The Entrepreneur Work to Residency Visa route looks like it could be a goer though:
Entrepreneur Work Visa
This provides a one year work visa in which time you can set up a business and then can apply for the full residence visa after two years of establishing the business.
