How and where did you catch that ??? :D

It was in Gisborne. I was surfing with a couple of mates, and a fishing boat showed up with it hanging off a line, thrashing around so much that they couldn't land it, so they got to the beach and cut it loose.

It was a bit dodgy with a mortally wounded shark swimming around, pretty big too, a good couple of metres long, so we got out, and when the tide went out, it was sitting on the reef.

Jack - it felt pretty good, but kicking anything in the arse feels nice doesn't it.

Whats kind of Nobby was it?

Hang11 Mar 6th 2007 10:28 pm

Re: The Great New Zealand picture thread

It's a Mako I think - deep water species, so not likely to nibble your toes when at the beach. Not really edible either.

We just left it there - I was kind of tempted to put my surfboard in its mouth, and get a classy looking bite mark in it, and BS everybody about how I'd fought it off!

There's some biggies around NZ, a couple of years ago at Raglan, a fisherman had a White Pointer out, 5 metres long, they had to use a scaffolding truck to shift it, and it had a 1.2 metre bite radius. It would swallow you whole.......they're well fed on seals etc though, so nothing to really worry about.

We may be big softies, but I think sharks are beautiful creatures, despite being hunter-killers :)
They certainly don't deserve to be tortured like that then left to suffocate.

It wasn't tortured, it was on a line on a boat, and the guys on the boat had tried to get it off the line and on to the boat using a gaff hook, but it was thrashing around too much to do it, so it had a couple of big injuries.

they wouldn't have been targeting Mako's - you can't eat them, and they's have lost their lines and lures to it as well. Just bad luck all round really, but you can't exactly take a wounded shark to the vet and give it a cuddle, all they could do was cut it loose and leave it to die.

I recently worked out how to play with the exposure settings on my camera so since then I've been waiting for a clear night to photograph the stars!

These were taken on a 30 second exposure (longest it'll do) and contrast enhanced in Paint Shop Pro.

The first is a little bit blurred (I blame the cat) but they give you an inkling of what the sky is like!

Was camping on our land last night and the night sky was absolutely awesome, wish I knew how to take a photo of it. It has so much depth to it doesn't it that you just can't capture in a photo.

Cool  I must invest in a better camera. I would love to be able to take photos of the night sky.
