Google Earth now has 3D terrain info for NZ
Google Earth has had a big terrain data update for New Zealand, which means you can now view towns and countryside in 3D. No 3D buildings yet though (as far as I know).

Google Earth is fun... I can see our house.
Can also see our old rental house and make out the spa in the back garden! Its very clear.

I just had a look at the Ashburton area and it looks exactly the same as the old 2D version to me
