good primary schools around nelson area

Hi all
does anyone know of any good primary schools around the nelson area I could only find one when I was looking. I was also wondering how other peoples children got on when they started school in nz, I was just looking on another web site discussion forum and they seemed really negative saying that there children had to go into special classes for reading and english after being in the top half of their class back in the uk. Starting to get a bit worried. also any tips on teaching styles with reading etc in nz my daughter is taught using phonics in the uk.

Not heard it that way round before. I read a similar thread on here (?) yesterday where people thought NZ education was about a year behind the UK.

No personal experience but a very good friend who moved to the Akl area's daughter who was in the top set in her class in the UK (same as my eldest) stayed in the top set of her class in NZ. In fact they put her on the gifted register in NZ which meant she got to do extra activities such as 'thinking skills'. This was UK state school to NZ private school, although I should mention that the UK school is top of the 'league tables' and not one achieving average results nationally speaking. I recall her mentioning they accessed her reading age when she started at the school in NZ (great idea) and she had a reading age of 11 point something, being 6 and 3/4 having just finished Year 1 in the UK.

I wouldn't worry. I am sure everything will be fine. If you go to the ERO website you can search on all schools in Nelson. There are loads. Have heard of a good one in Richmond area. Know of people happy with the couple in the Stoke area too. I like the sound of Nelson. :)
