Flippin' heck. You're doing well.

Our vege garden is looking a bit sad TBH. Garlic is up and drying on the deck . Onions & potatoes are still in but we haven't really had the time to do much else with it at all.

It's great seeing all the pics on here. 2nd season in, my veggie patch is coming on nicely. Plenty of beans and snow peas, the toms are taking their time but coming on now the sun has come out. Trying out telegraph cucumbers for salads, and gherkins for pickling (cos I love em!) and they're all starting to come through now too. It's really satisfying, and I love having 30 mins each afternoon in the garden when I get home just to relax and unwind after a day's work.

Do you have new chooks?

We got two Wyandotte pullets coz we so loved our last Wyandotte hen.
She was real friendly and would jump for a grape & come when you called her. These two are just a pair of scaredy cats.

Yep - T got three battery rescues off trademe, and they've been little gems. A little freaky to begin with (not unusal with battery hens apparently), but they v friendly and inquisitive now and we get 2 or 3 eggs a day which is brilliant. The other day I had eggs for breakfast, then crayfish for lunch, and fish with snow peas and spuds for tea. A whole day of food I had collected/ caught/ grown myself. Marvellous!

I was wanting to get ex-batts but the logistics proved to hard up here.
How are their beaks? I've heard ex-batt shavers can have a lovely nature.

I'm hoping our girlies get more friendly with time.

Know what you mean about eating your own stuff. Tiz grand.

All beaks bar one are fine. The odd one out has a little crossover going on, but it doesn't seem to bother her at all. If we put more time and effort into them, am sure they'd be super friendly. They happily follow me around as it is. Even better, they're not keen on flying and so no need to wing clip either. Bless their little fluffy bums

I wrote the above comment back in Sept whilst still in the UK....look at what we have got going now

We have stacks of plum tomatoes, which I will jar up. Will also be doing some sun-dried too. We have toms, jalapenos, italian bull horn chillies, basil, parsley, sage, thyme, chives, mint, lemon balm, rosemary, red onions, spring onions, beetroot, potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, swede, sweetcorn, rhubarb, white grapes. Can't believe how well everything grows here. Fairly early on we set up a timed watering system (like a fine mist) and it works great

We also have 8 chooks, 4 Orpingtons and 4 Light Sussex. 2 of the LS are actually roosters so will be going in the freezer fairly soon...keep putting it off cos they are gorgeous but the minute they find their voices...... I love my chooks, I could sit and watch them all day

Our neighbours are wonderful and put out their waste food for the chooks everyday

Yeah it is the 'The good life'

What some fantastic gardens you all have!I'm about to extend mine,I don't usually go for the dig method, but I don't have much time so have to get out there today and dig for England!I am also buying some chooks today, will probably get 4,can't wait, its been a long time since we've had chooks.I am just starting to plan what we will grow(love this time of year)and apart from veg,I am planting an apple tree, and will have quite an extensive herb garden(medicinal and culinary).I do love gardening, and its a great form of escapism.
