Re: god this makes me want to leave right now
there is a lot of seperate communities in NZ to......
Asians tend to keep themselves in certain areas....Howick where we stay has been nicknamed Chowick because of the large Asian community.....even have there own shopping centre, every shop Chinese......
British tend to congregate together(myself included)in that statement.....
most people when they move to a new country look for a bit of there own country, and you do tend to feel more comfortable around your own people....jacky

you just have to look on this site to get evidence of this.....
you feel more comfortable with like minded people....at least until you completely embrace the kiwi life, and that doesn't happen overnight....
you go to any country abroad where there is ex pats, and you will find lots of them socialising together....
not critisising anyone for doing this, hell i do it.....you tend to build an extended family through british friends, and you help each other out....jacky

I really don't see the problem with what those chaps are trying to do. Also not all Asian families have 5 kids and bring all their family over from India etc. These are the kind of generalizations that cause racism. Also I would like to point of that if it were not for Asians in the UK then we would be really really hurting in the NHS (more than we already are) They make some of the most educated and best doctors and specialists and many Asian families take Education and careers seriously.
I spoke to a girl the other day that wants to move to NZ and leave Scotland because she doesn't want her child to go to school with polish children. I was gobsmacked. Do people really think like this??????? I would rather my daughter went to school with Polish children, their parents are more likely to be at least trying to work or get a job, even if under the table than many many of the 'Brits' that take handouts and blame others for the state of the country. There is a reason so many families come to the UK, and I believe strongly that it is because there are so many jobs that so called 'Brits' wont do, too lazy, feel it is below them, but immigrants will do them and then 'Brits' complain that the immigrants are taking all the jobs. It is pathetic. Feel quite strongly about this. And anyone that says 'I am not racist' usually is. Which is fine, nothing wrong with your own opinions.
I hate being British. Being a Brit stinks, it really does. It stands for nothing these days, am almost ashamed. So

Seems like they want to build bigger houses so larger extended famalies can live in larger houses. Almost like some "european" or ex-Pat Kiwis and just like plenty of "Asian" Kiwis.
As the article says:
Bit of a Churchillian "Give us the tools and we'll do the job" so they should go far in NZ if they wanted to come.
So where is the problem?
And where do you think you would see a significantly different "problem" or "solution" in NZ - maybe in Oz on the sunshine coast where all is WASP-ville, possibly in some places in South Island, or maybe some parts of North Shore. Not in Auckland.
And TBH thank goodness......

Now, a few of those species would stir things up a bit wouldn't they? I wish people would realise how debilitating it is to go on and on and... about people 'who don't look like them'. It's like a naughty child - it's not their fault, it's the parents - in the case of immigrants who seem to be having it all it's the fault of those in power. Who wouldn't take what they're given for free? If everyone, on arrival in NZ, was given a 'goody bag' of a house/car/buggy (that seems to be a particular bugbear of people) wouldn't everyone think it was a marvelous place altogether? And tell all their family to come too? And as for an 'Asian' community or any other for that matter how many people only have ex-pats for friends in the country they emigrate to? I don't think it's good for anyone but if it's allowed and there's no will to change it then .....

indeed - even when the religious and social fabric of society is pretty damn close to home they don't, although in my experience they do tend to integrate with like-minded ex-pats from other countries and cultures (eg South Africans and Asians - particularly where they others are not firmly established in their own community)

One of our first friends we made here is Kiwi, we have other Kiwi friends too. I would go as far as saying he was our 'best friend'. We also meet up regularly with South Africans, Tongan and Samoan too! Couldn't wish for a better mix of people in my book. Yes I do regularly see/speak to Brits too but no more than I would our other friends.

When ever it comes to this subject [race] I always try to stay out of it, partly because its an old issue stemming through the ages of time. But it always riles me when people start off by saying 'i'm not racist'! I mean come on!! If people think coming to NZ will put an end to social differences they are sadly mistaken. [unless they walk around in a bubble!!].

The perception in the US may be similar to that of the UK in that many feel that the country is being swamped by brown people who speak funny languages, eat spicy food and work for low wages or feed at the public trough. The thing is that many British are a bit more proactive and consider emigration while the average American grump will just sit tight and watch Fox News and stew in their own hatred of change.

I used to hold this view of "why don't those immigrants settle into the communities, learn to speak english and do english things" until I moved to NZ and discovered that:
* my friends are nearly all ex-pats
* I frequent forum boards encouraging and helping other ex-pats to move here
* I claim benefits from NZ to support my children
* I am willing to travel far and pay through the nose for gravy because the local stuff isn't good enough
* I'm trying to get my in-laws here.
Fair comment?
