Newbie alert
Potential move in Jan'14. From sunny Leeds. Mrs NH heading for role at Middlemore (dr). daughter's 8 and will need to get her into primary. View to initially rent in suburbs (st.eden thru remuera at first glance but open to options) trying to get my head around the fact you need to be Zoned, sounds like a vicious circle. Also approaching st kentigerns as a back up plan...
Any advice very welcome...

arrive and view schools as they will not go back until February anyway! each school is different and you need to view them with view to your child in mind!
we viewed on day and within a week our little one was in a school even though we then moved to more permanent accom out of the zone the school did not worry however this might not be the case with all schools
If you are looking for childcare in the school hols as your are arriving in January check out the YMCA sites nearer the time they offer fantastic programs including week long camps which are really good value for money at $275pw full board including transport to camp and all activities! the equivalent in the UK is PGL and they are c£500pw! so 1/4 of the price! the day programs are good too and a good way for your little one to meet friends. From memory there is a program run at Ellerslie YMCA

regards
Janey

you will need to show visa in your passport or have the international student fees paid and that documentation before the school are able to offer you a place. we had approval but no stickers when ours started but showed them the confirmation letter and they gave us 2 weeks grace.
Agree about viewing the schools before deciding.

For the record I hate cats but least threw it back.

There is something concerning about turning up and trying to get your child into a decent school on spec, within a matter of a couple of weeks... especially from what I gather in suburbia Auckland....don't hold that against us, that's where the opportunity is offered.. (bear in mind we live in Leeds and not home counties types)

Our school is a decile nine and I am told one of the best in the area.
We had a look round on the Thursday and they started on the Monday.
We had to show our visas and our rent agreement to prove we were going to live in the zone (we didn't actually move in for a further 3 weeks).
We were also told that IF the school was at capacity then a child from outside the zone would be asked to leave!!!! Luckily it wasn't needed.

Check out the schools website, it usually tells you in their welcome how many kids they can place and if they have vacancies

It really is that simple

Oh yeah?

May I ask, what is a Home Counties 'type'?

I know few Yorkies who with their wealth and Surrey detached 4 bed house seem to have forgotten their days of growing up on the bread line around the streets of Bramall Lane, although I realise that's Sheffield, not Leeds.
