Re: General Election NZ
To be honest I've little problem with a capital gains tax, most countries have one and it's a fair tax, not sure on others mentioned...
'... in our first three years..capital gains tax will be on the table, a land value will be on the table and asset and wealth taxes'
phil twyford tax plans
probably why they don't need to change tax bands when also chopping National's planned tax cuts.
I suppose not publicized it, happy stay on relentless positivity theme instead!

Re: General Election NZ
Labour Party leader Jacinda Ardern is not ruling out introducing a capital gains tax (CGT) on rental/investment properties or second homes next term, saying Labour will listen to what their planned tax working group says on the issue sometime before 2020. Labour will not take a CGT to the electorate this time around though, she said.
Unless Labour has changed policy in the last week?
Interesting to see old Winston Peters moving left as Labour chases National votes. Heard him on radio talking about removing GST on "essential" food, reducing student debt with a 1:1 government co-contribution, discussing a SOE electric supplier, increased corporate taxation, not taking a position in a balanced budget and measures against speculative investment in housing. My perception is Labour are really targeting a centrist policy position, they've looked at what tactics worked for National and realised if they kick down the road on left wing policies they might attract a few more voters.

Tinker tinker tinker. A little change here, a little change there.
All total bollocks.
No-one mentions the elephant in the room, the SURPLUS and how it impacts negatively on us (well us plebs anyway)
From the UK:
We're racing towards another private debt crisis – so why did no one see it coming?
"As I have long explained, if the government is to run a surplus within the economy somebody else has to borrow."

Labour leader Jacinda Ardern will not rule out putting in some form of a capital gains tax in its first term if the party is elected to government.
The said working party is hardily going to be independent, it will be chosen and given a brief.

Someone else has noted that you'd struggle to put a cigarette paper between Labour and National on tax policy. Maybe they should form a coalition...

Labour have rejected a PPP (private public partnership) for the new Dunedin hospital.

Bill English calling housing affordability a "generational fix." National should just make transparent their policy on all difficult issues which is to just kick the issue further down the road.

Latest statistics show New Zealand youth suicide rate is rising.
Things are going from bad to worse.
Ninety thousand under twenty-fives unemployed is an indictment on NZ's neoliberal governments. Both National and Labour are to blame.
Who will stump-up with a Work Guarantee Scheme as proposed by MMT economists to give our young folk a reason to live and feel socially accepted?

Re: General Election NZ
Only party I can see that has a youth focus is TOP with their income guarantee. A word of warning however, and I'm by no means an expert on the subject, but I understand suicide has a number of contributing causes and while socioeconomic circumstances may be one you could also look at drug and alcohol use or culture or support networks as areas that need reform.

Re: General Election NZ
All young people should have a job!
Blimey it's not that difficult!
All government departments used to take on cadets and train them into a useful career. No unemployed school leavers....ever!
The problem is neoliberal philosophy dictates that government shouldn't be involved in the economy, because it drains from free enterprise, which is absolute rubbish (as MMT explains if you research it).

So, an income guarantee is going to make youth feel inclusive and worthwhile?
I don't think so...

According to Stuff "'Jacinda effect' is the best thing to happen to New Zealand"
and
"Kiwis are interested in politics in a way we never were before "
So, our next PM?
But too young perhaps?

One thing I'd definitely be in favour of would be longer parliamentary terms, as 3 years is ridiculously short, with half of the last year spent preparing for the next election.
As for Jacinda Arden, the level of excitement generated from the press does seem a tittle pathetic, what has she been doing from Opposition benches the last few years. It's reminder very much of the Tony Blair and John Key effects, hopefully doesn't end the same way.
