Gathering firewood
Anyone know what the story is, regarding gathering firewood? I know you can't just cut down a tree from public land. Is there any rules regarding the collection of firewood?

Don't get caught.
There's always a load of driftwood and logs on the beach, free to good home I'd assume.

Unfortunately the salt in driftwood will wreck your fireplace, plus the vapours produced are carcinogenic.

Really? I just checked Google Scholar and PubMed but drew a blank on any research showing burning firewood is linked to carcinogens.
Riverwood?

Re: Gathering firewood
Driftwood from the ocean has absorbed salt. Burning of salt releases dioxins ( sodium and chloride) , some argue that dioxins are toxic and cause cancer. I’m no chemist however and have no idea. I’m sure even the experts disagree. I grew up with the idea that a bonfire on beach was okay but burning driftwood at home in an unventilated, concentrated indoors area was unhealthy and more importantly ( to Dad) ruined the fireplace. Urban legend maybe, but I don’t know of any one who burns driftwood at home. River wood would be okay but I’m not sure if it would be frowned upon to collect. I’m sure collecting a little would be okay. I’ve gathered pine cones from forestry areas in the past.

my understanding of taking driftwood from beaches is your are not allowed to cut any and you can only take what you can carry on foot.

Re: Gathering firewood
Are you saying it is illegal?
My experience is that there's a lot of wood lying around, even in suburbia. More so I would think if you are rural.
One time we were out with the kids and came home with a bootload of manuka. I wasn't thinking 'better not get caught' when we hoiked that back to the car.

Re: Gathering firewood
Any wood lying around will belong to someone or be on someones property
You can contact owners of forestry blocks for permits to collect on there but as has been said if you get caught just taking it, it can be seen as theft because it NOT YOURS to take
