Food, Stuff You Are Used To
Hello Again (Serial Poster).
May seem a bit of an odd question but can you get the things in NZ that you can get in Blighty ie: Tetley T, etc. |
Re: Food, Stuff You Are Used To
There are a lot different kinds of food in New Zealand. If you can't find the exact brand that you are fond of you should be able to find a close approximation. Sometimes you just have to get creative.

Re: Food, Stuff You Are Used To
You'll find you won't really miss things that much - you can get pretty good alternatives for most things and there are the odd shop that imports british brands. The only think that I don't mind paying extra for is Bisto gravy - $7.50 for a little tub but worth it:)
I also find the fruit, veg, meat and fish much nicer here. |

I also think you'll get on better if you can through yourself into a new experience/life and include in that your eating... be experimental and open and ask lots of peeps and you'll eat not only better, but far FAR cheaper!!

That's a good point. If you really like your British food you'd be better off staying in Britain. I don't think the NZ diet is much different to the UK one anyway....more Lamb out here, of course. |
Re: Food, Stuff You Are Used To
I just noticed you're in Paignton in devon! When we moved here we were living in Blagdon Barton - about half way between Totnes and Paignton - i used to shop at Paignton Safeway or Lidls! My ds1 went to playschool in Collaton St Mary:lol:
I had the sister of a friend of mine and her family here for a day over Christmas - they live in Paignton too... they loved it and if it were up to her husband they'd be moving here... |

Also agree that kiwis - of all nationalities - are delighted to help with unfamiliar ingredients - the farmers markets are wonderful - fresh ginger/lemongrass/galangal - didn't even know what galangal was 'til I came here! And, of course, all sorts of pumpkin/squash - not just at Halloween! |
Re: Food, Stuff You Are Used To

I agree that the farmers markets are wonderful - the one up in Kerikeri is FAB! I'm going to keep my eyes out for a copy of that book - it sounds great. x |

You'll find the longer you are here the less you miss stuff anyways, my taste has completely changed and now if I try chocolate etc from the UK it tastes funny to me.
Dilmah is the best tea I have bought over here. It's hard to know what's a good brand and what's bad at first so you have to try stuff and just decide for yourself. |

The only big problem I had when I first arrived was.... mayonnaise ... even today - *what they're talking about, is... salad cream* 'Best' is the brand to go for - I was told, years ago, that it's Hellman's branded Best for the Oz/NZ market. |
Re: Food, Stuff You Are Used To
I'm sooooo addicted to Best mayonaise that it's just not funny :p

Re: Food, Stuff You Are Used To
