I have flown singapore, emirates and air NZ, and like them all. All the tines we have transited we have never had an issue at LAX, but believe others have. You do only get 23kg luggage allowance on air nz, but you can pay for up to 2 extra bags per person - an extra 46 kgs each, i think it cost us $150/bag, but so much cheaper than paying the per kilo rate if the other airlines.

I've done this 6 times in the last year, each takes no longer TBH then passing through NZ immigration if you are on an electronic passport, automated passport gates, no need to show your ESTA or anything once you have travelled on it the first time.

TBH what makes more difference in how long you have to get to the ongoing gate once you have cleared immigration and security is whether you are sat at the front or rear of the economy cabin ;-)

And there are health benefits to a 20min walk in the middle of a 24hr flight...

Not necessarily. They code share on other routes, such as via Singapore with Singapore Airways. The NZ to Singapore leg is with Air NZ and the Singapore Heathrow leg is Singapore Airlines.

If you go with another airline than Air New Zealand, be a bit careful if you plan to fly to Whangarei.

It'll probably add at least another $159 per person. That's with put any extra baggage costs given they only fly ATRs I think to that airport.

We went with KoreanAir LGW to Auckland (stopover in Singapore). It was excellent, by far the cheapest at the time and as it was a long stopover coming back (19 hours) they put you up in one of their hotels (we stayed in the Grand Hyatt which was the poshest hotel I have ever stayed in). Attentive service and good food.
