However, that doesn't change the fact that in Germany the market between renters and buyers is much more balanced. If it is too expensive to buy you simply rent which is totally acceptable. And as I mentioned in Germany you are not only socially accepted as a renter but also well protected by the law. It is much easier to be a renter in Germany than in NZ.
Yes it is more balanced between renters and buyers in Germany but I don't live in Germany. I live in NZ. Our flat is in terrible condition and we pay a high amount of rent.

But I do live in a small town in a small country where everybody knows everybody and where it's always who you know. I am quite sure that if I pick my moment the L/L will agree to smoke alarms at least, but I need the place for two years, so I need him to want us here for two years. There is a rental shortage in my 'boom' town.

I can't imagine who could afford that sort of price Marblep.

Well, I'm not sure that's quite what I said, but I think that would apply to any culture really.

Ugh! Hopefully a decent investigative journalist, no doubt working for a quality newspaper, will pick this story up and run with it and soon the smuggers will be exposed as thieves and swindlers and be answerable to the congregation, the public and the law .... oh wait, lol, I was getting carried away there. It's NZ- they'll probably enter politics or summat.

They really annoy me. I could quite happily slap them both very hard everytime I see their smug faces on that billboard on SH1. I hadn't realized that they live in Gulf Harbour, we obviously don't move in the same social or financial circles! !!

I completely understand. I was just saying that it is not attractive at all to be a renter in NZ. It is not really an alternative long term. The rules are weak, the rent is high, and it is socially not really accepted to be a renter. If you are to stay in NZ I think it is probably wise to buy. However, a lot of people can't really afford the high prices in Auckland. So you can chose between being a powerless renter or being a home owner without any money left to spend for the next 30 years. Not a choice we were comfortable with. Alas, we are not in Auckland anymore

Sounds like a really defeatest attitude to me.

Every time I use the "Its who you know" cliche, Its usually after I feel hard done by for whatever reason but on reflection, nearly always Im not.

Not at all defeated - I left

I lived there for 23 long years and still have loads of friends and family there. The underlying connections between families and friends mean that it's never as straight-forward as just going to a lawyer, or a tribunal, especially in a small town.
