I'm not sure I want to admit to any of this, could be quite embarrassing but I was very young! My first record bought for me was by someone called Trini Lopez!!! and the first record I bought was Andy Williams.

I am not quite as old as these might suggest though!

Re: First single/LP/CD bought?.........and when?

First LP: The Beatles "Let It Be" 1970. I had picked the winners of a double that my nan put on for me. It paid $38 for a 50c outlay. I only saw $10 of it though :frown::sneaky: But from that I got the record.

I was never much of a collector of 45's, preferring the LP's instead. My first album on CD was Bob Dylan's "Masterpieces". I got that early 90s (had had it on vinyl before then.)

The first single I bought was Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen in 1975. I got it from John Menzies in St.Helens for 45p. I think that shows great taste for a 10 year old but then I'm biased .

My first LP was Abba's greatest hits, bought in 1975/6 period I think.

Life on mars by David Bowie.
I dropped it as I walked home and chipped the very edge so had to be careful how far in to place the needle.
Anyone else remember having to put a 10p coin on the arm of the record player to stop it jumping?:eek:

In my day it was an old penny. Life on Mars was an early single for me as well, loved the phone ringing and "what a lovely one" at the end of the record. I always had to turn the volume up for that. Do you remember that part of the record?

Further story about the Blackberry Way single I mentioned earlier is that my Father was so sick of me repeatedly playing it he broke it and put it in the bin.

Re: First single/LP/CD bought?.........and when?

First single I got was Rubettes - Sugar Baby Love (as Xmas pressie about 74)
First single I bought (as I remember) was _ Madness - One Step Beyond (79) or Matchbox - Rockabilly Rebel (also 79) - both charted in November/December of that year, when I went up to Secondary School .... memories.....:)
First Album - mmm.......that would be one of the Larry the Lamb in Toytown albums, the one with the Dachshund ("Oh Mr Earnest Sir" was the catchphrase of Larry) or possibly something me dad got from the Cash & Carry - again a pressie, not sure the first one I bought but it was probably from Graduate Records, the "home" of UB40 and probably some heavy metal, SKA or 80s stuff.
First CD - Level 42 - World Machine, about 86 (got a shiny philips oversampling CD player via "the trade" - nice) - unfortunately it did not sound as good as my early 1970s Swiss turntable - I was an early digital-skeptic......actually, my numero uno "FTS" sticker (FTS = "favourite track selection" - a gimmick from philips that stored 256 or something favourite CD selections in the player memory, not that I had 256 discs!!!) is on the Sam Cooke "Wonderful World" compilation CD, so that must have been early on. Think I got that from RCA when I worked there.......

Sligtly OT - but relevant - how about Juniour Choice??

Almost forgot that prior to owning all the vinyl I used to sit by my Sharp radio cassette player during Juniour Choice (sat and Sun am) and the Top 40 shown (Sunday pm) to tape everything I fancied and had ooddles of cheap tapes of classics like:
Puff the Magic Dragon
Two Little Boys
Nellie the Elephant
Morningtown Ride (I sing that to the kids now as a lullaby)
Must admit that the old Sharp got a fair old hammering what with the pause button wearing out! Happy Days.........:D:thumbsup::D

David Bowie: Great choice

We used a 10c piece on the arm. Wouldn't a 10p piece have been a bit heavy for a poor old 45?

Hey you remember those radiograms/early stereos with the thingy that held up to like 6 records, and one would drop down after the end of the record that was playing?
