A related concept (in my experience, growing up in the 80s-90s) which will seem bizarre for many Brits is that of running out of hot water in the morning, after (or before!) everyone in the family has taken their shower.

In many houses the hot water cylinder is quite small and only heats up during the night (when electricity is cheaper)... so once the supply is used up, that's it until the next morning!

Conversely, if the fire has been running the "wetback" for a few hours, you may find yourself leaping from the shower like a frog thrown into a pot of boiling water

Wow NZ was a rather distant dream when I posted in this thread.

In case anyone is wondering why I just dredged up this old thread, I was checking on wood fires. We just started our first a couple of days ago and I wanted to check if we were doing everything right. Turns out it's not all that complicated!

Stormer you were still in the UK back then too

that would be yes. I have to admit we're not really cold (Still wearing T shirts) but you have to admit a cosy fire is a very pleasant thing as we've recently discovered
