Fine for NOT voting during Elections ???

Does New Zealand Govt. FINE Permanent Residents (Not Citizens) for not voting during Elections?

Some countries have hefty fines, others do not. What about New Zealand:confused:

I'm sure there used to be a fine here for not enrolling

They tried to fine me in Aus for not voting last year . In a democracy it should be my right to stay in bed all day and not go to the polling booth if I so choose...

Although it is not compulsory to vote in NZ, it is required by law that all New Zealand citizens over the age of 18 who are eligible to vote are enrolled. I am not sure what the penalties are for failing to enrol, or how well it is policed

Permanent residents who have lived here for at least a year must also be enrolled.

The roll is closed now for this election.
