Feeling Lazy in Timaru
 

Hello again everyone...

This is Stef writing from our flat in Timaru. I guess I just wanted somewhere to vent a little bit about how I am feeling and my experiences so far. I hope you guys won't mind, hey you can always just read someone elses thread if you do! LOL.

I have been in Timaru now with my husband for over 2 weeks and I am just feeling so lazy! I hate feeling like this as I consider myself to be far from lazy!:blink: It is a nightmare getting a job! I know, I know, it has only been two weeks and you are all thinking "wow this girl is impatient" but it is really hard when you don't know anyone and have no job. Me and this laptop are attached at the waist at the moment!

I have signed up to all the recruitment agencies in town (all 3 of them!) and I buy the paper with jobs in every Weds and Sat. Nothing in admin. Well I tell a white lie, there was one job the other week which I did apply for and I heard nothing. It is depressing to see The Press newspaper as there are so many jobs in Christchurch for me!!!! Now that would be a long commute! I have also contacted various companies in the area and have had no response.

I hate being here when Paul is working so hard. It just makes me feel lazy and useless. We don't have any kids and won't be getting a pet until we are settled in our own place. I am 24 and have always worked since I left school, I don't do sitting on watching TV all day and there is only so much walking around Timaru you can do! I am starting to exhaust all my options.

Sorry guys I am coming accross as a right whinging pome here aren't I?! I hope you can appreciate the reasons that I am moaning! I am so scared as I really really really want it to work here, this has been my dream for so long and if I don't start to work/socialise/make friends/get out of the house I will go CRAZY :blink: I feel so isolated.

On a lighter note I love New Zealand, the weather has been great for a while here now and people are very friendly. We are moving into a house on saturday so I am pleased to be getting out of this flat. It is kind of annoying that we have to buy stuff until our furniture gets here but hey thats life. I have spent alot at the $2 store in town:D lol

Anyway this is enough of my waffle for now, come on guys cheer me up and tell me to knock myself out of this:D

I can fully empathise with how you feel {you can tell I'm a mental health nurse from that eh? ;)}. I got into work 9 days after we moved to New Zealand and 11 days after moving to Whitby, but in the UK, he was in the RAF and I had to look for a job every time we moved. Like you say, there is only so much time wasting you can do before you start to feel lazy and of no use to anyone.
On the bright side, at least the weather is glorious - think how much worse you would feel if it was the middle of winter :eek:.
Have some karma to keep to going, I'm sure something will turn up before too long :cool:

hi jacky here,know exactly where you are coming from, we have been here 7 months now and i am still not working....its quite difficult for me trying to get a job (hairdressing) fitting in with school hours,and i also don't want to work weekends...(family time)

i have decided to work for myself....just setting up a mobile hair service so fingers crossed.....

anyway ,you will feel better,i think when you move house itwill make a difference to,as you don't sound like you like a flat.....i didn't like the first house we came to,and found myself lounging about all day(which just isn't me)....when we moved to this house (which i love)my mood picked up and i felt more positive.....

i think most people feel the way you do at first,its almost like a bout of depression,then comes acceptance and you settle down...please believe me when i say this is perfectly normal......but see if you can find someone to meet up with,even if its just for a coffee,it does help....i know you will have heard it all before when i say it is early days,but it will all come good.....jacky

Oh, I hope something comes up for you soon Stef. Is there anything you can do in the volunteer sector while you are looking? When I didn't work and was looking for something to do I went to the CAB and they gave me details of voluntary jobs. Just a thought.
Are there many ex-pats in the area? Not suggesting the locals aren't interesting just that other ex-pats will know how you are feeling!
It will get better, as jacky has said, once you move that will keep you busy for a while and I'm sure a nice little job will come up for you soon :)
I'm just starting to look for an admin job too, my difficulty being I'm not a great typist!

Hi Stef.
This is Jason, you spoke to my wife Sarah last week. By coincidence I was the English bloke that you saw in the pub at Bay Hill looking at houses. I heard the accent but didn't interrupt cos you seemed to having a right old chin wag! As you can tell by the time of my message I'm still suffering from jet lag. I've been awake since 3.30 am!!
I agree that Timaru is a lovely place but one of the concerns for me is that it is very quiet. I suppose its not surprising with a population of 27,000 and after leaving places like Sheffield and Chesterfield most places will seem quiet.
Good luck with the job hunting. I'm sure that very soon when you have a job and get settled into your new house you will be fine. Anyway it could be worse...its bloody freezing here with snow forecast for Friday and Saturday!
