Default Family of 4 considering move to New Zealand

Hello,

New here, as the title says really, me and my wife have both been toying with the idea for at least 8 years, i think we have hit the point in our life where we must act on it. I have filled out assessments to get basic knowledge on what we need to do, but thought it would be more helpful to come here and ask what the best course of action is,

We are both 30, have 2 children 5 and 2 year old. I currently work as Head Chef (unsure if chef still in demand). My wife is duty manager for a supermarket.
Currently only have a small savings, not considerable to get us out there to live comfortably for a year, but that being said if we sold our house for what we bought it (fingers crossed) we would have a sizeable chunk there to help us out, this is something im not banking on with current markets you never know.

Do i hold out and try to find a sponsorship, or do we just get a holiday visa and look for work this way?

We just wouldnt mind an insight from the people who have been there

Thanks

HI and welcome to BE
Head Chef is on the Long Term Skills list as well as the Skill Level Class so as long as you can get an offer of work that fits the criteria you should be able to uplift a visa.

My husband came out on a visitors visa and managed to get a job offer, this was back in 2011 and in IT field, so not sure how easy it would be for your profession. Myself and the kids followed afterwards.
we had to sell the family home in the UK to afford the move but really wished we hadn't but if it is the only way you can afford it.....

What are your reasons for NZ?

Hi,

Your kids are the right age to make it better for them. If you are thinking of buying a house, like living here permanently, just a word of warning. NZ apparently has one of the highest median house prices in relation to median wage in the world, especially Auckland. I have been told that the ‘right’ number is under 5, it Was just 3 a while back, the median house price in Auckland is over nine, nationally it is around 6.5.

Anything over 5 is considered ‘unaffordable’ . Here are a couple of links re this issue. If you do not want to buy a house it will not be of interest to you, but it gives you an idea of how things can be out of kilter here with the rest of the world.
