Default Eyes specialists? Need HELP with Glaucoma,

Hi,

I need some advise/help with Glaucoma which is a disease in which the optic nerve is damaged, leading to progressive, irreversible loss of vision. It is often, but not always, associated with increased pressure of the fluid in the eye.

Anyone who could provide me with more info & some advise....?

Is it better being seen/treated in UK or NZ? It usually affect people over 80 yet my ex has just been diagnosed with it at 30!

Just need some advise really...

My Dad has glaucoma and as a result I get free eye tests in Britain (as I'm over 40). Wonder if that will be the same in NZ. Dream on !

No free eye tests in NZ for family history of glaucoma or diabetes etc. OH's father has glaucoma.

Matewx , I'm sorry I can't help you with this. I'm sure both countries will be equally well-equipped to treat it, but your ex needs to start the treatment sooner rather than later.

This is a really good site http://www.glaucoma.org.nz/ it can hit at any age and you do not have to be over 80.

I have glaucoma in my family and have my eyes checked regulary - I was referred for further investigation I could have gone to the public clinic at Grenlane, Auckland or I could go privately. I decided to go privately to the Eye Clinic http://www.eyeinstitute.co.nz/ and then went for a follow up to the initial appointment I went to Greenlane Opthalmic Clinic (part of Auckland DHB) as it was cheaper. Both of them were very good and provided very good service.

I have been referred to an opthalmic clinic in the UK before moving out here and I have to say the service and explaination I received here in NZ was a lot better than the UK.

Hope this helps

I spent four months in Wellington last year with my son, I`d had an eye test in UK before I left for NZ, all was said to be OK, couldn`t find reading glasses before I left for the airport, eyes tested in Wellington and was told I was at risk of ACUTE glaucoma. Acute glaucoma is also known as Angle Closure. I went to Capital Eye Clinic, saw Dr. Tony Wells, he tried laser surgery, it didn`t work so he operated to open the angles, fitted lenses and I no longer need glasses. I stress that this was Acute Glaucoma. The treatment was excellent, in my case it was covered by my travel insurance, it will be different for you perhaps.
Good luck.
Pat.
