Any tried and tested economical international shipping options from NZ? - do not wish to spend a fortune on excess baggage

Not really.
Other than purchasing excess baggage before travelling there isn't really a more economical way to my knowledge.
I assume you mean for goods travelling with you ?

Air NZ used to be very very cost effective, not sure if they still are

It's normally much cheaper to book the excess baggage upfront rather than buying at the airport/check-in counter. You are probably going to do this anyway but worth knowing. Air NZ used to have special deals for immigrants a while back so worth checking if they still do.
