plug convertors, gang planks,
books here as mega expensive, limited choice on toys
there is not in between in goods so its either top of the range or cheap (ie no m & S quality and price) so solid furniture is well sort after,
Electronics are cheaper ie a Ipod touch in Argos is 145 gbp here its $245 or cheaper but this follows for most electronics

The breadmaker was a good idea. Curtains and material to make them are very expensive here but would be hard to buy before knowing the house I guess.
I wouldn't bother with books because you can just get them from the Book Depository as and when you want them.
If I had my time again, I'd pack a lot of paint (Dulux!), but I'm not sure if that's ok in the container.

Gang Planks?
No need for Toys... No Children. Just me & Wife. unless you count my collection of Land Rover Diecast Models.
Have most of the Electronics, but will be a regular at Jaycar for components so i can carry building my own items. Soldering Iron packed away already.
OH collecting Cooking / Baking items.

A full collection of socks and underwear. These items seem expensive for some reason. Most items are available. White goods are more expensive buty not sure it would be worth buying new and not testing first.

I brought a 2 year supply of ibuprofen, decongestants, paracetamol, ibuprofen gel, gaviscon, Soluble Vit C etc. Nearly bought out Wilkinsons!
Agree on the paint, but I seem to recall I shipping agent wasn't so keen (PSS). A few pairs of spare good quality shoes and trainers?

You will probably need to download a copy of the recipe book/manual applicable for New Zealand. We have a Panasonic bought here which is for use in Australia & New Zealand & every recipe has different ingredient quantities & some different timings between the 2 countries.
The Australian recipes definitely don't work here, so you may find the British recipes don't work here either.
Also Rapid Bake doesn't work with NZ ingredients.
Well worth it though, saves us around $800 a year!!

According to our shipper paint is a no no, not because its banned although technically its classed as hazardous, but because if it spills it can ruin everything.

don't bother bringing over a new printer as the print cartridges may not work in them

Mrs Fychan, you could create a link from this to your posts regarding your saga with your printer and ink cartridges !
Me ? I just spent NZ$45 (not quite £25) on a new printer. I also explained what happened when I tried to get a refund on the ink cartridge that was sold to me incorrectly by their branch in Christchurch, NZ. They gave me a 30% discount on a new and correct ink cartridge. (The incorrect cartridge went in their bin)

Re: Essential Items to buy before Moving
I personally dont think there is anything "essential" to bring with you. This isnt a 3rd world country and a breadmaker or whatever else is readily available here.
We arrived with nothing but a backpack of clothes after travelling in India and Asia after leaving the UK. All our stuff was sold before we left as we were determined we wouldnt be going back and the cost of shipping seemed way to expensive.
Having just moved in to our first proper home here we have kitted it out with a new bed, mattress, sofas, dining suite, bar stools, cutlery, plates, small kitchen appliances, 42" TV, rug etc. etc. etc. for way cheaper than we could of in the UK and its all come to less than the price we were quoted for shipping stuff.
Just our experience though, understand its not the same for everyone.

Did you bring a Sou'wester? Could be handy for all those strong southerly blows!
