Electronic Design Engineer

I'm thinking of emigrating to New Zealand. As much as the environment and lifestyle may be great, if there aren't any jobs in my line of work its not much use.

I have been looking on various sites for Electronic design engineering work, particularly at a senior level. With a much smaller population than the UK, I'm not expecting 100s of vacancies, but there doesn't seem to be much at all.

Am I just looking in the wrong places, or is electronic design something that's not in much demand in NZ? If there is a demand for electronic design engineers, could you point me in the direction of where to find them, or any reviews of the electronic industry in NZ?

Thanks

You can try Fisher & Paykel, they make white ware and the associated electronics, however they are heavily outsourcing to the Far East. So you may be out of luck.

OZ and SE Asia have a much bigger electronics industry than NZ

My husband's a electronic design and test development engineer and he's been told there are openings in NZ but to stick to the major cities ie christchurch, wellington or auckland

a friend of our took a job in a similar field which was what he did 15 years ago...he patiently waited and then 16 months later started at his dream job...so there are jobs out there but you may not get it straight away BUT you will get there but will need to bide your time

good luck

Hi Dave
Christchurch has a good few electronics places like Tait, Tyco and others.....I've sent you a PM.

In NZ I've found that just because the job you do isn't advertised at present, it doesn't mean they are not looking for someone in your position.....NZ employers are always looking for people with skills and expertise. I've heard of employers creating positions for people because their cv and experience were so wanted.

I sent my cv to a few companies directly even when jobs were not advertised and got an interview.

It is also good to be on the ground here and getting word of mouth, buying the local newspapers for job ads, networking, knocking on companies doors etc.

good luck with the job search!

Barry

Yep, totally agree. It seems to be who you know, not what you know and I've heard countless stories of people getting work just by asking, or because you get talking to someone and their mate is looking for someone to join their company.
