The Earthquake Poem
This comes with thanks to Gary on Christchurch's More FM radio station. I am sure he won't mind me posting it as he said we could use it or print it yesterday on the radio. Hope I am not breaking any copyright laws but thought it was such a moving piece and just had to share it with all of you that have not heard it or catch him reading it online here http://www.morefm.co.nz/Thinking-WED...6/Default.aspx
The Earthquake Poem
In the glare of the bright gray morning, the howling ghosts of an ancient past send the bones of our city rattling. The ancient hills, the veins and sinews of mountains speak.
They say “ We have been here for a long time and we have been ignored. Most of the time we sleep, sometimes we stir, and sometimes as men do, we snap. The contempt of ages rears within us”
Mountains stretch, rivers yawn, below us some unknown hand reaches out to the sun, the hand which shakes the cradle splits the home, parts the ground.
Having turned in its sleep, the earth sighs and peace returns, and we are once again reminded in whose arms we lie.
