Geology of New Zealand from Wikipedia:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geology_of_New_Zealand

Auckland volcanic field: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auckland_volcanic_field Volcanic activity can also cause earthquakes, it's not just the fault lines.

I'm sorry, but I don't think you can find an area in NZ that is completely, 100% free of any seismic/volcanic activity and the associated risks.

ok Auckland is the safest bet then to move to, you have less chance of a tsunami and less chance of an earthquake , the eruptions of the volcanoes wont happen for another thousand years

hello Imz

I don't think you have quite grasped this simple fact. ( actually u do mention it in ur OP )

" There is a dirty great big fat fault line running down the centre of NZ."

Volcanos are formed by lava popping up out of the earth from wee weak gaps created by this fault line. If the volcanos blow, there may well be earthquakes too. If we have earthquakes the volcanos might explode / or new ones form. Who knows ? NZ has risen and sunk into the ocean a couple of times too. We're all doomed.

The only place you're gonna feel safe is Alice Springs - in the centre of Oz.

Wrong again I'm afriad. the biggest most danergous tsunamis would be caused on the other side of the Pacific and hit the East coast including the islands off Auckland and to a degree Auckland it self.

...and vulcanology is every bit as inaccurate as seimology so no-one can tell it will be another 1000 years!

"I understand Auckland is safe" hang on

ok stopped now!

do a bit of research and you will see all of Auckland is sitting about 50k above a molten pit of lava waiting to explode at any moment

please IMZ stop looking at NZ as it really seems that captain danger has left the building and landed here for a long stay his nemisis Dr cotton wool has taken flight and is on his way to the UK where he will survive for many years in eutopia and peace.

good luck

george

How does one define dangerous? The roads have way more fatalities as a result of virtually no median barriers. Ther are a number of geophysical nightmares that could be wrought upon us...BUT its nice here. Its very empty and that is the attraction for many. I guess there are things in the UK 'that could get me'.....terrorism was a real issue in the UK..maybe it still is. Here the threat of terrorism is virtually zilch. Taken on pros and cons I would rather live in NZ every time than in the UK. It all depends how you deal with the possible threats in your environment. Where I live now is utter utopia by comparison to the post code I left in Northampton. I honestly could not wish to live anywhere else just now full time. You pays your money you take your choice. Mine's NZ everytime.

The only REAL safe place is Northland..top of the North Island. Why do you keep shouting? Google 'earthquakes NZ..map etc' and you will see they just don't occur up there.

Im sorry Genesis that just aint true

The Northland Earthquakes of 1963
The complacency of Northland residents was shaken by two earthquakes in six weeks at the end of 1963. Until the severe quake of December 23rd it was widely believed that Northland was one area of New Zealand that was free of local earth tremors.

Doomed I say. All doomed.
